| Crackdown. More of the same? | |
Single player review for Crackdown.
Well let me start off by saying that I'm not a big fan of GTA. I have watched that game consume peoples lives and valuable TV time. It's not that it's a bad game, it's just that it's a poorly designed game. That being said I expected the same for Crackdown.
Let's start this off..
 The box art was horrible and it really didn't add a positive angle to my already cynical perspective, however there have been many good titles with horrible box art. I popped the disc into my 360 and braced myself for another uninspired GTA clone...however i was pleasantly surprised with the game that is Crackdown.
Premise
You are a genetically altered Agent...or a super cop. Your job is to take down the various mafias all over the city. You can do this with weapons, melee skills and vehicles. As you go along you gain experience and level your various abilities.
Characters
Not a lot of depth for each character story wise, however I did enjoy the way you could level each ability up and as you leveled your character your appearance would change. Very cool twist (I'm a sucker for character development). The extra downloadable agents were kind of interesting. The character design is my major gripe, none of the agents you could pick look vastly different from each other...which kind of makes playing through with different agents kind of pointless.
Graphics
The graphics are fairly cell shaded, but look great, I would have to say a vast improvement over most games of this type. The buildings weren't anything special, but did not lack in detail or take away from the massive environment you are placed in. The vehicles look good and do take damage. There are a few added effects in the game that are kinda neat, like if you're jumping off a building and land on the pavement you might leave some (temporary) cracks where you landed, little things like this are nice.
Sound
Sound was good, nothing overly impressive, nothing terribly bland. The choice of music for the game (while in the vehicles) isn't quite GTA, but isn't horrible, just not memorable. The gun shots sound good, however more variety would be nice for the npc voices.
Gameplay
Well the controls are much tighter than GTA, and in general the game is much more fun to play. The control over the vehicles is quite nice, and the ability to level up your various skills adds extra depth to the gameplay. it does still have the feeling of GTA, however it is not nearly as boring due to the super hero kind of feel you get from playing the game.
Replay
The single player is good for one trip through the game...would i do it twice? Probably not, but i would consider playing the multi player with some friends.
Verdict
This is a half decent game, it doesn't have the depth of Saint's Row, but it avoids the monotony of GTA. A good purchase if you like free roaming games with an upgradable character system. However if you're looking for a game with a lot of depth...rent it first.
