Required Items
- A Xbox 360 with a Toshiba/Samsung DVD Drive
- A Torx 10 Screwdriver
- A PC with SATA
- A Hex Editor (HDD Free Hex Editor)
- Xtreme Firmware Files
Identify your Xbox 360 DVD Drive
Before we start going to all the effort of explaining to you all how to do this we had better check that you have a Toshiba/Samsung DVD Drive in your Xbox 360.. This is very simple.
Without opening the console all you need to do is eject the DVD-ROM as normal and check against the images shown below:
Opening Your Xbox 360 Console We have already gone to all the effort of adding relevant tutorials in our beginners area.. You can find a perfect tutorial for opening the xbox 360 console here.
Im sure youll find the case quite easy to open when you have all done it once.. I thought it was going to be pretty tricky but it ended up being a breeze.. When i have more time i will write up my own tutorial for how to open your console explaining everything in detail..
Creating A Bootable Floppy Disk
Before we start connecting cables and what-not we will be creating a ms-dos boot disk.
1. Insert a blank floppy disk into your PC.
2. Format the floppy disk ensuring the box that says "MS-DOS system disk" (or similar) is ticked as shown in the image below.
3. Once the disk has formatted successfully copy over MTKFLASH.EXE and MTKFLASH.TYP manually to the floppy from mtkflash183c.zip. (right click copy and paste) OR use the Send To -> method shown below.
right click both files and choose 'Send to 3.12 Floppy (A:)'
4. When finished your floppy should look similar to the example image shown below..
Connecting the Xbox 360 to PC
At this stage in the tutorial we will need to connect the Xbox 360 DVDRom Sata Cable to your SATA compatible PC.. We wont power it up though just yet.
1. You will need to have your Xbox 360 and PC next to each other.
2. Remove the SATA cable from the back of the xbox 360 dvdrom drive.
3. Connect a SATA cable from your PC - SATA (port 1) to the xbox 360 dvd drive SATA connector.
4. The Xbox 360 DVD drive should still be powered by the xbox 360.
PC Configuration
To be sure that everything will run smoothly remove or disable:
- All IDE Channels (except for floppy disk).
- All SATA ports except port 1.
Back-Up Original Xbox 360 DVD
Firmware
This is one of the most important parts of this tutorial.. Once you have followed the instructions below and have a backup of your original 360 Dvd Firmware please be sure to keep it in a safe place..
1. With everything connected but the xbox 360 console still powered off restart your PC and boot the floppy disk you just created earlier.
2. Once the DOS-PROMPT has been displayed on the PC from the boot disc turn on the Xbox 360 Console.
3. Type the follow commands at the pc command prompt and press enter: mtkflash r backup.bin
4. Press 1 to select the SATA master
You have now successfully made a backup of your dvdrom firmware.
Make a few copies of it if you have to and place it where you will remember.. Safety is always the best policy.. hehe
5. Turn off the Xbox 360 Console.
6. Disconnect the SATA cable from the PC.
7. Re-Connect your pc drive's and re-enable All IDE Channels, SATA ports.
Modify the firmware
Every Xbox 360 DVD Firmware has a unique key that marries your console and your drive together. These value's must match or the drive will not work. We will be injecting your original xbox dvd firmware key into the modified firmware which has no key using a hex editor.
1. Copy the file backup.bin from your floppy disk to your PC Hard Drive
2. Start up HHD Software Free Hex Editor
3. Choose 'File' and then 'Open'
4. Find the 'backup.bin' file on your PC Hard Drive (step 1)
5. Select everything in the hex range of 4000-4200 (example image below)
6. Press Ctrl+C to Copy (Hold Control while pressing C)
7. Choose 'File' and then 'Open'
8. Load the file from the Extreme Package named 'extreme.BIN'
9. Once loaded Press Ctrl+G (Hold Control while pressing G)
10. Type '4000' in the space provided (the hex address)
11. Press Ctrl+V to Paste
12. Choose 'File' and then 'Save' and choose to save the xtreme.bin file back onto the floppy disk.
Flashing the Modified 360 Drive Firmware
mmmm, Well this is the tasty portion.. Do you have the balls??
Well most have.. Continue on at your own risk..
1. Connect the Xbox 360 to the PC using exactly the same method as you used previous in the step "Connecting the Xbox 360 to PC".
2. Be sure to Unplug or Disable all other Drives using the same method as descibed in the step "PC Configuration".
3. Restart Your PC and insert the MTKFLASH Floppy Boot Disk
4. Once the command prompt has been displayed turn ON your xbox 360.
5. Type the following command at the cmd prompt and press enter:
mtkflash w xtreme.bin (example image shown below)
6. Press '1' to Select Master
Congratulations, if you have followed this tutorial correctly your xbox 360 is now hacked.. :) Happy days..
Testing the Modified Xbox 360 Drive
With the hacked firmware in place we really need to test to make certain everything has gone to plan.. Let's run through some basic stuff.
1. Insert a Original Xbox 360 Game
- The game should boot as normal..
- Test loading a few games if you choose.
2. Insert a Backup Xbox 1 Disc
- If you have one available insert a backup Xbox 1 game..
- The Xbox 1 Backup WILL NOT WORK but it will be recognised as a game by the emulator.
That's it your done.. Enjoy!
