Mortal Kombat 8 Gets The Boot

Mortal Kombat 8 Gets The Boot

This might come as a shock to the die hard fans of the Mortal Kombat series or it may not but in a report on kotaku.com co-creator Ed Boon gives us a little insight to what happened with the Mortal Kombat 8 that was promised to us last year but never heard from again.

You got to love this pic

At last year's Midway Gamers Day, Mortal Kombat co-creator and series overlord Ed Boon talked up the then-unnamed eighth entry in the franchise. Boon described Mortal Kombat 8 at the time as "very dark, serious" and "gritty" take on the series, a back to basics reboot that was free of "vibrant, saturated colors." It was said to be heavily inspired by the look of Gears of War.

Obviously, that didn't quite happen; Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe did. Boon said that the down and dirty MK8 was scrapped when the DC Comics deal solidified.

While MK Vs. DCU was met with mixed results, it wasn't an unexpected by the MK team. Frankly, we were pleasantly surprised by the game — despite our very much looking forward to the team's previous vision — and think that will show when we post our impressions of the Midway fighter later today.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Get's Fatalities

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Get's Fatalities
Published by: wes213 on Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Looks like the long awaited news has hit and the verdict is that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe will have the fatalities that all true die hard MK fans thrive on but the DC characters will only have brutalities.

In an interview with Gamespot Ed Boon explained by saying: "Mortal Kombat characters and DC villains will have fatalities, whilst the DC heroes will have ‘brutalities’, because they’re goodies and aren’t allowed to kill people.

Brutalities will function exactly like fatalities, but without killing the opponent, so you’ll get to see Batman beating the hell out of the likes of Scorpion, which is always great."

Speaking on the early development stages of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Ed Boon stated: "Going into this, we've had a number of conversations with DC about what people's reactions will be. We have been pleasantly surprised as to how cooperative DC has been with us. They understand that their universe isn't as violent as Mortal Kombat's and that there would be a lot of assumptions that the game would be a "watered-down MK." So from that standpoint, we know that is where a lot of player's concerns would be. With that, our discussions with DC are mainly based on individual items that may or may not be too violent or are not in brand with their characters. Certain animations, blood effects, and sound effects that we have in the game are really pushing the T-rating envelope."

So if your like me and was sure we would get a filtered, censored, bag of bull then today is a good day my friend, feels like a small victory for violent video games the world over.

Just to make you think a bit Ed Boon left off with this little bit of insight: "I've never held back my enthusiasm for doing a project like MK vs. Street Fighter. I still think it would be a blast to do. But the reality of the situation is that we are two different companies. That's a tough obstacle to overcome. It's kind of like doing Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter, Die Hard vs. Rambo, Coke vs. Pepsi, "Family Ties" vs. "Growing Pains," Alien vs. Preda...never mind...you get the idea."

Ed Boon On MK VS. DC

Ed Boon On MK VS. DC

Lots of talk had been circulating about the newest installment of Mortal Kombat and if it would have blood and fatality's due to DC the fact it will have characters in it and Ed Boon has stepped up to put this topic to rest.

In a GameTap interview Boon was asked about the level of violence that would be in this installment of MK and Boon said: "I guess that's my favorite part of the reaction--your exact sentence, which is, "it looks like fatalities will be gone." There was never any statement on our part that fatalities will be gone or that finishing moves will be gone. We did acknowledge that we won’t be able to do the same kinds of outrageous moves, like tearing someone's head off and the spine being attached to it. But there are a lot of assumptions that there will be no blood in the game, that there are no fatalities in the game. It's an assumption that, because the DC characters will be in there, those features will have to be dropped. My response is that, no, we're modifying fatalities. But I have every intention to keep finishers. You know, to let gamers do a really cool secret button combination and follow with a really outrageous finishing move to end the match. The names of these moves, and the level of violence we use, are to be determined. But it's certainly not a feature we plan on eliminating from the series."

"Yes. I certainly can't speak with authority as to what DC will permit. There will certainly be some limitations. But my intention is that we want to push the envelope of a T-rated game as far as we can without being an M-rated game."

So there you have it MK keeps the violence but it just wont be to the gore filled extent thats past MK games used.

One more hot topic circulating the net is how they can use Superman since he has the power to wipe out the MK world like a nuclear war head to which Boon replies: "What cracks me up about that idea, and I have been asked that by so many people, is that you can make Superman as strong or as weak as you want in the programming. But how do you make it to make any sense? Well, we know the back stories to the characters. For instance, Superman has two weaknesses, Kryptonite and magic. The Mortal Kombat universe is surrounded by magic--I mean, we have sorcerers, people from the Nether realms; we have chi and magic attacks. So, remember that cataclysmic event which merges the universes? The source of that is magic. When you mix that in, that explains why Superman, who can move a mountain, who can push a planet, is, in this scenario, weakened a bit. It explains how the other MK characters are strengthened a bit, which levels things out. Superman is a big one, and one of my favorite DC characters that I cannot mention yet is another. Any character with huge, crazy superpowers begs the question, "Well, why don't they just use these superpowers? Why wouldn’t Superman just move at light speed behind his opponent's back and break his neck?"

I was always under the impression that Superman got his power from the earths sun and from all i have seen out world is always dark, so how will Superman have any power at all?

I guess its just best to not over think some things and just have fun.
