Stuart Black and other members of the Black development team are working on an all-new new modern shooter with Codemasters.
Bodycount probably doesn’t mean anything to you right now. After you read this, it will.
Codemasters member Stuart Black is the man behind this new shooter monster that picks up and runs with Black‘s spirit. From the man who created “Black” last console generation (2006), we expect nothing else.
Stuart Black is a man who created a pioneer FPS. Black was a game with immensely interactive environments; a player was encouraged to blow up a guard tower rather than kill the guards inside; because they could, and it was fun. Almost everything in the game was destructible, or interactive. The graphics were great, and it featured game play that still sticks out in this writer’s mind.
Bodycount’s interactive environment can be summed up by the following: “Take a gun to a wooden weapons crate, and it will slowly, believably disintegrate, the wood chipping away to reveal a more stubborn metal frame and within an ammo box that sits atop a bundle of straw - shoot the ammo box and as you'd expect it's fireworks time. None of which may sound thrilling in itself, but here's the thing – this extent of destructibility extends to nearly everything in Bodycount's world. Spray a vending machine with bullets and it'll begin to tear itself apart convincingly until all that's left is a metal skeleton and a pile of broken glass. It's a first-person shooter with an exacting eye for the explosive.” (Martin Robinson, IGN)
If that doesn’t have you interested, please check yourself for a pulse. Bodycount’s single player follows main character John Doe as he blows up, shoots apart, and kills everything he (you) can. The game boasts an intriguing, mysterious story driven by testosterone through what will become one of the best game environments to date. The main character, John Doe, is “dragged out” of retirement by a shady organization named simply “The Network”. The player soon finds that the Network is not a good place to work, though, as Doe is drugged by the organization; then wakes up free falling from a few thousand feet in the air. A message scrolls across the screen, “Welcome to the Network. Your safety is our concern.”
Bodycount implements a distinct class system with its enemies, much like Killzone 2, but in more depth. At the top of the bad guy food chain is the tank. As in every game, the tank is a well armed and hard to kill opponent. A great thing about the game is that the enemy ranks are not just broken up by the size of a health bar. For a little strategy, shoot the medic first in a group of soldiers and the rest will be weaker. Shoot an officer and they may become disoriented. Bodycount looks to be a game where a player can do anything. Run through the campaign with guns blazing, or develop strategy for each enemy encounter.
The game is also said to feature a chain multiplier that will unlock special abilities such as a minigun, predator drones, and helicopter strikes. How will it work? By the body count, of course. The faster and more you kill, the more points you receive. This feature will also be a part of Bodycount’s separate co-op campaign, but no word yet on whether or not the multiplayer will sport a similar system. Multiplayer and co-op from the spiritual successor to Black; the game looks to be an all-in-one package to redefine FPS once again.
The game is also said to feature colorful and beautiful areas, “other networks” with high-ranking agents, an intuitive cover system, and some of the same developers that worked on Black. Look for more news in the coming months, and hold your breath for Bodycount to hit shelves early next year.
The explosive open-world action game Crackdown 2 is slated to hit store shelves on July 6 for the Xbox 360, Microsoft has revealed.
The sequel to 2007's Crackdown features the law enforcement group the Agency as they attempt to thwart criminal activities in Pacific City.
The game will feature four-player cooperative action as well as a 16-person competitive online multiplayer mode.
The first Crackdown, best known for packing a beta code to Halo 3's multiplayer, became one of the surprise hits of 2007, receiving a pretty strong critical response.

Activision Blizzard has announced that the publisher’s newly formed internal studio, Sledgehammer Games, will handle an iteration of the Call of Duty franchise in 2011, taking over the reigns from franchise stalwarts and creators Infinity Ward.
This news arrives on the back of the revelation that Infinity Ward studio heads and co-founders Jason West and Vince Zampella have been let go from their positions after an apparent breach of contract with Activision, in the wake of a worrying period at the developer on Monday that saw strong-arm and intimidation tactics resulting in panicked, “confused” and “freaked out” employees.
Infinity Ward will temporarily be led by Activision CTO Steve Pearce and production head Steve Ackrich, both of whom have backgrounds in Activision Publishing.
Sledgehammer Games, headed up by former EA studio Visceral Games (Dead Space) leadership Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, will work on a 2011 entry to the Call of Duty series (which is said to “extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre”), while Treyarch will continue its collaborative franchise development efforts by releasing 2010’s iteration.
Infinity Ward will continue work on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s two map packs, both of which are due later this year, while Activision claims the studio will remain “central” to the future of the franchise, with rumours that the developer will handle another Call of Duty game in 2011 in addition to Sledgehammer’s game.
Additionally, Activision has set up a business unit to specifically manage the Call of Duty franchise and to promote “various new brand initiatives,” which will be run by Philip Earl, who currently heads up Activision Publishing Asia Pacific.
Through this business unit, Activision will begin to place a heavier focus on “high-margin digital online content,” as well as attempt to create Call of Duty games in a variety of different genres, even alluding to the possibility of a Call of Duty massively multiplayer online game, while Activision Publishing is currently in discussions with a number of select partners “to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.”
Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith said in a statement:
“2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise. In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players.”
As reported by Adelaide Now, the discussion over whether to add an R18+ ratings category for videogames in Australia has been scheduled for an undisclosed date in April.
The timing of the discussion means that it will take place after state elections in South Australia and Tasmania on March 20. South Australia is, of course, home base for anti-game Attorney General Michael Atkinson, often fingered as the lone holdout among his fellow AGs when it comes to backing an R18+ rating category.
In related R18+ news, the Australian website GoldCoast penned an editorial backing the addition of an adult videogame rating category, stating that it should be up to parents to decide what their children view.
Problems are occurring between Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision, and they're not digital problems.
According to a G4 source, a "bunch of bouncer-types" have turned up at the Infinity Ward studios, unannounced. Studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West met with Activision this morning, and both haven't been seen since.
Now though, Infinity Ward CTO Jason West has reportedly updated his Facebook status as "Jason West is drinking. Also, unemployed."
West's LinkedIn profile has also been updated:
"President/Game Director/CCO/CTO Infinity Ward
January 2001 – March 2010 (9 years 3 months)"
So for the moment, it looks like Jason West is no longer part of developer Infinity Ward. When updates reach us, we'll let you know.
UPDATE: Some more updates to bring you, as Activision are investigating "breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward." as revealed by an SEC filing made this morning by the publisher.
It goes on to say that the "matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation. At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company."
After widely reported offline and online PlayStation 3 errors began surfacing late last night and early this morning (depending on your geographical location), game developers are now reporting similar errors with their specialised PS3 debug units.
Due to an endless looping error message, the debug units are apparently being sent into uninterruptible rebooting cycles, which is thought to be related to the problems users are experiencing with regular retail PS3s.
Even if your PS3 console has been offline, there is a high probability (if it’s an older model) that the internal date may have reverted back to 12/31/1999, as reported by Joystiq, which has caused data corruption errors and resulted in newly acquired content, such as downloaded games and awarded in-game Trophies, to not be recognised and ‘lost.’
Sony is aware of the problem and is currently hard at work on a fix, and we should hear from the company soon in this regard.
[Update] Sony believes that they may have found a solution to the problems plaguing PS3 owners, and that a fix may be available within 24 hours, but for now warns PS3 owners not to use the console until further notice [End of Update]

It looks like loads of new mods have surfaced for the console version of the game allowing some pretty crazy things like Spawning with an AC-130, God Mode, Disable Enemies Perks and Golden Desert Eagle. The care package glitch is also working again.
