Activision's CoD3 and THP8 not hitting 720p

Activision's CoD3 and THP8 not hitting 720p
Published by: forahobby on Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Someone call Activision and let 'em know that 720p means 1280x720, please.

Games-Aktuell, a German gaming outlet, has discovered that Call of Duty 3 and Tony Hawk's Project 8 are not running at a 720p high-def resolution.

When the tests were run, CoD3 was shown to be running at 1040x620 pixels and THP8 at 1040x584 pixels. The pixel drop reflects a resolution drop of 30% and 34%, respectively. The resolution drop could be assumed to help keep framerates up, but THP8 reportedly has framerate problems. So what's up?

Activision Germany told Cynamite.de that they weren't aware of the problem and are looking into it. Lower resolution is not something that normally just happens by accident, but given the recent quality assurance problems with CoD3, these resolution problems may just be another woeful mistake. If intentional, why the resolution drop in THP8 when the 360 is clearly powerful enough to handle something like Gears of War just fine?

“Viva Pinata” Bursts Into Stores: Don’t Beat ’em, Join ’em!

Breakthrough Xbox 360 game “Viva Piñata” hits store shelves and creates new Piñata Islands around the world.

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 9, 2006 — Horstachios, Fizzlybears, Fudgehogs, Mousemallows, Elephanillas and Pretztails are just a handful of the 60 species of wild piñata, coming to homes this holiday season in “Viva Piñata™,” the highly anticipated Xbox 360™ game for kids of all ages.

Breaking new ground in Xbox 360 family entertainment, “Viva Piñata” was shipped to stores on Nov. 9, and it will continue to be rolled out to retailers throughout the U.S. and worldwide through Dec. 2. Created by world-renowned video game developer Rare Ltd. and Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, the two-disc “Viva Piñata” Special Edition invites game-players to escape to Piñata Island, where wild-roaming, living piñata animals are looking for a home.

“With the arrival of ‘Viva Piñata,’ we’re opening up Xbox 360 to new audiences and inviting more people to jump into the fun,” said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “This is a game that will have broad appeal. Families will play it together. Kids will play it by day, and, I’m willing to bet, their parents will play it at night. Even for the seasoned gamer, ‘Viva Piñata’ will be a great escape, and they’ll see it as a guilty pleasure.”

People of all ages will enjoy the vibrant world where they can create and customize their own environment to attract, tame and nurture more than 60 species of wild piñata and make their experience uniquely their own. Packed with hundreds of personalization options, “Viva Piñata” lets people name their piñatas, choose accessories for them to wear, decide where to plant grass and flowers, and more. The colorful, fully customizable game invites people into a world with all kinds of possibilities.

People first experienced the world of “Viva Piñata” in September, with the debut of the Saturday-morning computer-generated animation series produced by 4Kids Entertainment and Bardel Entertainment on 4Kids TV on FOX. The arrival of “Viva Piñata” for Xbox 360 establishes a crossover between the show and the game as people, young and old, tune in to the series to pick up hints and tricks to take back to the game.

Viva Piñata” gameplay will be extended through the Xbox Live® online entertainment network. Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to connect with friends, family or other players from around the globe to trade items from their piñata paradise — everything from the smallest plant to the largest piñata. Players with the free Xbox Live Silver membership also can trade items. And Xbox Live will offer accessories for download into the game to personalize piñata collections.

The genesis of the “Viva Piñata” franchise came from Rare Ltd., known for such all-age-friendly games as “Banjo-Kazooie®” and “Grabbed by the Ghoulies®.” Veteran developers of these games, as well as a new crop of talent, worked together to craft “Viva Piñata” into the fun-filled game available now on store shelves.

“Right from the start, we knew we wanted to create a game that featured a garden full of customizable, tradable animals with unique appearances and behavior patterns,” said Gregg Mayles, lead designer for “Viva Piñata” at Rare Ltd. “When we were looking for a design twist to make it stand out, our concept artist came up with piñata-themed sketches, and the look immediately stuck.”

Additional “Viva Piñata” products are expected to debut in fall 2007, with Playmates Toys Inc. and American Greetings Corp. already on board for toys and party goods. The latest information about “Viva Piñata” is available at http://www.vivapinata.com, the virtual island where gamers can find hints and tips for the Xbox 360 video game, get the latest updates on the 4Kids TV animated TV series, and score exclusive extras including games, activities, ring tones and avatars.

Viva Piñata” from Rare and Microsoft Game Studios is rated “E” for Everyone and is available exclusively on Xbox 360. The game started being shipped on Nov. 9, and will be on store shelves by the following week with an estimated retail price of $49.99. The two-disc “Viva Piñata” Special Edition Xbox 360 game, available for a limited time, will include a second disc with playable demos of LucasArts’ “LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy,” the arcade classic “Frogger” as well as family favorites “Cloning Clyde,” “Time Pilot” and “Marble Blast.” In addition, a full-length episode from the zany, anything-can-happen animated TV series “Viva Piñata” is also included.

Xbox Team about Developing the Xbox360 HD-DVD Addon

Xbox Team about Developing the Xbox360 HD-DVD Addon
Published by: patto on Sunday, November 05, 2006

What takes 4.7 million lines of code, partner teams from all over Microsoft, and millions of dollars to create? The Xbox 360 system software? Nope. This is just the HD DVD player.

The Xbox platform team (us) is experiencing its own emergence day as of late; we've been hard at work for the past 8 months straight bringing the fall system update to fruition. I haven't even posted since August. Daryl's already gone over a lot of the features and changes that are in this release. I've personally been working on the Xbox 360 HD DVD player (which, by the way, reached the #1 best seller slot on Amazon.com's video games category) and I thought I'd go over some of the technical difficulties it takes to bring HD DVD to market.

There's a perception that HD DVD is just DVD with HD content, but once you look at things more closely, it's clear that HD DVD is a different beast altogether. The Xbox platform team became serious about HD DVD last year, when Microsoft as a company threw its endorsement behind the standard.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, for the most part, is an entirely software based implementation. Other players on the market have specialized chips (called DSPs) that decode things like H.264, MPEG, VC1, DTS, Dolby Digital, and other codecs. Much like how backwards compatibility for Xbox 1 works on Xbox 360, the heavy parts of HD DVD are all done on Xbox 360's triple-core CPU.

Gears Of War cost Microsoft over a Billion

Gears Of War cost Microsoft over a Billion

Epic boss Mark Rein explains how Gears Of War cost MS a lot of money...

At a recent Canadian Community Party, Epic VP Mark Rein was on hand to take a light-hearted open floor Q&A. Aside from a lot of information on Gears' gameplay and marketing, Rein also joked about the rumours of how the game costs Microsoft one billion dollars.

Thanks to the wonder of Major Nelson and his latest podcast, you can quite clearly hear Rein said "That story you all heard about us costing Microsoft a billion dollars, that's actually true!"

He continued: "So what happened was, my partner Tim Sweeney, we kept arguing and we really wanted a hard drive in every single machine; that was something we really wanted but we realized that the 512 megs of RAM was way more important, cause otherwise you couldn't do this level of graphics if you had to both write your program and do your graphics in 256 megs. Nothing would really look that HD.

"So we argued and argued, and what Tim did is he actually sent a screenshot of what Gears of War would look like if we only had 256 megs of memory. So the day they made the decision, we were apparently the first developer they called; we were at Game Developers Conference, was it two years ago, and then I got a call from the chief financial officer of MGS and he said 'I just want you to know you cost me a billion dollars' and I said, 'we did a favour for a billion gamers'."

Revolving around entertainment for everyone and playing with friends in fun, new ways, the first television spots began airing this week in the United States and viral campaigns are underway.

“We continue to raise the bar of what is considered ‘next generation’ with our game titles and console experiences, and we are pushing creative boundaries with how we communicate to consumers,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing, Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “These campaigns will cement Xbox 360 as one of the most recognizable, worldwide, youth-focused, consumer brands – one that brings the next generation of console gaming to everyone.”

The award-winning marketing team, fresh off of a Silver Lion win at Cannes, multiple One Show awards for interactive excellence and a National Gold ADDY for “Best of Show,” from the Xbox 360 launch campaign applies new elements to Xbox 360 packaging, advertising, web and retail.
