Gaming's Secret Weapon: Why Mobiles Aren't the Only Driver of Success

Gaming's Secret Weapon: Why Mobiles Aren't the Only Driver of Success
Published by: forahobby on Tuesday, August 13, 2019
Tagged: Gaming,

We all know that gaming revenue is on the up. If you read the 2018 Global Games Market report from Newzoo, you’ll now that consumers spent more than $137 billion on games that year. Breaking down the numbers, we also know that mobile games have become the biggest revenue driver over the last five years. In 2018, smartphone and tablet games generated more than $70 billion. As well as making mobiles the dominant force within the industry (51% of total revenue), that figure represents 25.5% year-on-year growth.

Gaming's Secret Weapon: Why Mobiles Aren't the Only Driver of Success

Given the current level of interest and, moreover, innovation taking place within the mobile gaming, this dominance is likely to go unchallenged for at least a few more years. However, while few would argue this sector has been responsible for the recent revenue spike, there is another reason. Less obvious but no less important, casino gaming has also helped play a part in the overall appeal of gaming.

Casino Gaming Has Become a Multi-Billion-Dollar Industry

Although it’s not listed in Newzoo’s report, casino gaming is a behemoth in its own right. According to Statista, revenue in 2017 was more than $45 billion. At that level, online casino operators generate more total revenue than console and PC gaming companies. Looking at how the sector of the industry became so lucrative is a two-art equation. Firstly, the inherent appeal of casino games is one that’s gripped cultures around the world for centuries. Indeed, if you look back through history, games such as blackjack were being played as far back as the 1700s.

The second reason for online casino gaming’s success is incentives. Because there are never any certainties when you play slots, baccarat etc, operators have had to find ways to improve a customer’s overall experience. One way they’ve done that is bonuses. Although they’re not designed to offset someone’s losses, they do offer a break from bad luck. The recently revamped NetEnt Casino details the latest offers and highlights how this is the case.

By categorizing bonuses by size, style, type and location, the site has made it easy for players to review, compare and, ultimately, find the best deals. So, if they’re a fan of online slots, they can use the site to pick out an offer such as the NetEnt Casino 20 free spins no deposit bonus. As well as a link to the deal, they can get the low on its terms and conditions before committing to it. Armed with all the necessary information, they can use their free spins to shoot for real money prizes. The benefit of this is that they can win some cash and enjoy a bit of mystery and intrigue at the same time. This, arguably, helps to improve their overall experience.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare “Reckoning” DLC Hits Tomorrow First on Xbox

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare “Reckoning” DLC Hits Tomorrow First on Xbox

Sledgehammer Games and Activision announced today that “Reckoning”, the fourth and final DLC pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, will be available starting tomorrow August 4, 2015 first on Xbox Live for Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare DLC

Brace yourself for Reckoning, the final downloadable content pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Grapple your way out of ship-fired missile strikes, dodge plasma lamp explosions and boost jump off crumbling glaciers in four all-new MP maps.  The culmination of the Exo Zombies saga: Descent introduces a remote ocean Atlas survival
facility, new “fused” zombie enemies, and the Trident Reflected Energy Weapon. Discover the true cause of the global pandemic and the terrible secret that Atlas has been hiding.
  • Overload:  Set in downtown New Baghdad, the map’s multiple levels and long perimeter site-lines are great for medium to long-range combat. Modern architecture provides a tactical layout with a grand view.

  • Quarantine : This medium sized map takes place on an island following a deadline outbreak that features both tight corners and open areas that combine to allow for any style of gameplay.  In the atrium, every step is precious as the floor opens up, in a timed dynamic event, to reveal a bottomless disposal pit.

  • Fracture : Locked away in the arctic, players take refuge behind wind turbines and heavy equipment that allow for large combat.  As the ice buckles and breaks away, flooding escape routes, long-site lines are more key.

  • Swarm : Narrow corridors of this small to medium sized map in Seoul, South Korea, are the setting. Close quarter store interiors tell the story of a war scarred city that has flanking routes and cover all around.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Reckoning also brings fans Descent a new experience that introduces a remote ocean Atlas survival facility, new “fused” exo zombie enemies and the Trident Reflected Energy Weapon. In the dramatic conclusion of the Exo Zombies saga, Descent continues where Carrier left off. Following the discovery that one of their own (John Malkovich – In the Line of Fire, RED, Burn After Reading) is now among the undead, the squad (Bill Paxton – Aliens, Titanic, Edge of Tomorrow, Rose McGowan – Planet Terror, Scream, Jon Bernthal – Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street and Bruce Campbell – Burn Notice, Bubba Ho-Tep) find themselves in a difficult situation as they attempt to discover the true cause of the global pandemic and the terrible secret that Atlas has been hiding.

Take your first look at Reckoning, the final DLC pack for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare:

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Reckoning will be available tomorrow, first on Xbox Live.  The Reckoning DLC Pack is also included in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s DLC Season Pass, featuring all four DLC Packs planned for the year, as part of the discounted bundle.

Epic's president, Michael Capps Speaks Out

Epic's president, Michael Capps Speaks Out
Published by: wes213 on Tuesday, November 04, 2008
Tagged: Xbox 360,

So it looks like gamesindustry.biz has had a little set down with Epic's president to get his take on all angles of the game industry including topics like social gaming, the new Xbox Live Experience and the company's business plans and in all i must say i started out just looking it over and found myself reading it all.

GamesIndustry reports: Q: Gears of War was Epic's first narrative game. When you first set out on the project, did you have any idea it would capture gamers' imaginations in the way it has?

Dr Michael Capps: You always aim for that, right? We were actually scared to death, because our numbers for online interest were tracking really, really dangerously big - and we were worried about bring over-hyped.

I mean, we were number one on 1up, number one on Gamespot, everyone was so excited and we were like, "How do we live up to this? Everyone's expecting so much". Inevitably, when you've got sort of interest coming in before you sell it, you've got the folks who are saying, "Well, it isn't perfect" - there's always a little bit of detracting that way.

But [the excitement] was so much more than we ever would have expected. We thought we'd made a really fun videogame, but we didn't know people would have so much interest... I mean, Newline is making a movie! We've never been in that space before.

Q: Do you think there's a key element of the game that caught peoples' imagination?

Dr Michael Capps: We built a really beautiful game. Our technology set the bar, I think, for next-gen gaming. There were a lot of people with brand new HD TVs and Xboxes and they bought Gears of War to show off. I mean, with videogames graphics is what catches your interest and the controls are what keep it.

I think the idea of 'destroyed beauty' really resonated with people, more than just the hardcore shooter owner. The Mad World commercial is a good example - we didn't aim that at 18 year-olds who like to shoot stuff up in videogames, we aimed it at their girlfriends and their moms, people who would see that this is a deeper, more resonant world.

Q: I love the idea that you based the development of Gears around one phrase - 'destroyed beauty'. Is that an ethos you bring to all game development at Epic?

Dr Michael Capps: It is now! We actually had a few statements about Gears - another is 'you never fight alone'. This is a game where it's you and your mates and you're playing as a team together against crazy odds.

You're not one guy going round as a super hero - you're a team of guys. In the second one those relationships between the characters play an even greater part.

Q: Gears, then, is part of this industry trend toward social gaming?

Dr Michael Capps: Yes. I really want to be able to have my girlfriend or my mom play this game. My girlfriend's a gamer, but she's a Nintendo gamer - this isn't her sort of thing at all. But she had a blast, she looked around, saw the pretty settings and love the cinematics.

We want to make it accessible - I mean, that's how you sell videogames. The Sims sells for a lot of reasons: one, because it's great and two, because it's so accessible to everyone. So trying to take a game that's such a niche hardcore title, but open up the controls and the story to make it more widely appealing - so far it's worked pretty well.
