As reported by Adelaide Now, the discussion over whether to add an R18+ ratings category for videogames in Australia has been scheduled for an undisclosed date in April.
The timing of the discussion means that it will take place after state elections in South Australia and Tasmania on March 20. South Australia is, of course, home base for anti-game Attorney General Michael Atkinson, often fingered as the lone holdout among his fellow AGs when it comes to backing an R18+ rating category.
In related R18+ news, the Australian website GoldCoast penned an editorial backing the addition of an adult videogame rating category, stating that it should be up to parents to decide what their children view.
Oh, boy. Did anyone really expect Sony to take Microsoft's comments yesterday without jabbing back? If there's anything we've learned in recent years, executives (besides Nintendo, it seems) love trash talking and riling up the Internet fanboys. Yesterday, Microsoft VP Peter Moore said Sony didn't have the talent to design an online service like Xbox Live.
C'mon, Sony, show us what you got:
"I would argue that consumers worldwide, to the tune of over 200 million PlayStations, PS2s, PSPs and PS3s, have decided whether or not Sony has the DNA to deliver hardware, software and services to suit this industry. I think if you look at Gran Turismo HD alone, it points to the potential of the PlayStation Network and the kind of ground breaking content we plan to offer," Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of corporate communications, to GamePro
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone just shut up and focused on making -- let me know if I'm taking crazy pills here -- gamers happy? What a concept.

Today NCCA and Madden Strategy Guides went up on the Xbox Live Marketplace. For 160 Microsoft Points each ($2.00 USD) you can download these videos that will give you tips on one of 4 fields, Defense against Passing, Defense against Running, Offense with Passing, or Offense with Running. These sets of videos are available on both of the recently released football games, Madden 07, and NCAA 07 for a total of 8 videos. Also available for Madden, two Classic Stadiums: LA Rams, and Seattle Seahawks. These are 300 Points each but if you are a fan of either team much more worthwhile to download.
As if EA has not already milked us all to death with crappy ports and buggy next gen games they decide to charge for videos. This is a trend I hope no one else follows. It has been common for most any game to be bundled with a Strategy Guide of some sort. I would have thought that vidoes such as these should have been built into the game, not as a means to squeeze more money out of the consumer.
We have released a limited edition of NME-360 Chips. This is a pre-version of our final design. Just to keep things rolling we decided to release them to the public, So whenever you will find an NME Chip that looks like this, you can be sure to have a genuine NME-360 Chip plus keep it in honour because we made just a pretty small batch (<1000 pcs). Please make sure that you connect this chip to 3.3v instead of 5v on the board. We will ammend our diagrams very soon.
Service providers will determine the timing of content
Microsoft has issued a statement saying that IPTV functionality will not be included in the fall 360 firmware update.
It has also suggested that the service might not be launched this year, as was originally promised by Bill Gates at the CES show earlier in 2007, as the new technology will only be given to service providers by Christmas.
"Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) features will only be available from the Xbox 360 through a service provider who has deployed Xbox 360 with Microsoft Mediaroom (IPTV) services," MS told Gamespot in a statement.
"Xbox 360 with Microsoft Mediaroom (IPTV), will be available to service providers by the end of the year. Microsoft's IPTV service providers will ultimately determine the timing of Xbox 360 with Microsoft Mediaroom deployments."
Rumours that IPTV would be included in the looming firmware spiralled from a customer whose console was exposed to the new features while being serviced
"This was an isolated incident where these features were inadvertently exposed while the customer's console was being serviced and is unrelated to the fall update," continued the statement.
