I turned my machine on to find that a download had to take place. I wasn't aware of the update, but I am sure some of you will run into it.

As per 1up's article this was actually the January 2006 update.
January 2007 Xbox 360 Update:
January 2007 Update was only for a few performance issues and also fixed some stability problems. Sadly this update didn't feature any updates to the new IPTV deal, nor add any other features that we can see.

This free Xbox 360™ update is great news! We've been listening to what the community has been telling us, so we're happy to announce that this update will improve your gaming experience...
Here are some of the changes in this update:
- Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
- Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
- Increased accuracy of "last time played."
- Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
- More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.
