"Track and Field" (also known as Hyper Olympics outside the USA) was originally released as an arcade game way back in 1983 by Konami but has now been given a facelift and is available to all Xbox 360 users via the Xbox Live Arcade for as little as 400MS Points.
Overview
Known to many as the originator of the button mashing sports genre "Track and Field" was soon a hit amongst arcade gamers as many of the people of all ages and sizes gathered around to compete with their different button mashing techniques. The enhanced Xbox 360 version of Track and Field including Xbox Live features is more fun then ever especially when you have a few buddies over to compete or via Xbox Live.
Gameplay - 6/10
Up to four players can compete in up to six events on the same console or over the Xbox Live Network. Each player is given three attempts to qualify in each of the six events before being given the chance to attempt the next effent. If a player fails to qualify in atleast one of the three attempts the game is quickly over and you have to start all over again from the very first event..
The game itself can be controlled in a number of ways.. You can control your player by either quickly tapping the BLUE (X) and RED (B) buttons rapidly or by toggling the left joypad left and right.. I found the left analog joypad to be the best especially for building your speed up with the least amount of fuss.
Track and Field Events:
100 Meter Dash
Long Jump
Javelin Throw
110 Meter Hurdles
Hammer Throw
High Jump
Graphics - 6/10
As you would expect the graphics are exactly copy from the original arcade classic apart from the suttle HD enhanced graphics which do make a great improvement when viewing the game on a HDTV. Whether you choose authentic or enhanced graphics you will certainly enjoy this very simple title as it is because it doesn't require a heap of animation for you to enjoy competing and playing the game.
Many arcade games in the past forced you to play with a border around your HDTV and that is one thing I couldn't stand but finally with the last few Xbox Live Arcade releases I have noticed they have gotten that issue sorted. (thankyou devs). You can now choose to customize the game to fit your tv so that you dont need to play with background art or borders.. This is one feature that nearly all early Xbox Live Arcade titles failed to supply. This option can be found within the HELP & OPTIONS screen.
Sound - 5/10
Just like the original arcade release Track and Field does not have background music so that wont be a issue.. It just has all the original sound effects included and by the sound of them they are all enhanced too.. The only music I heard from the game was when you enter your initial's in the beginning.. Apart from that you can just enjoy you basic sound effects or play your own custom audio from your own personal collection.
One thing which may get on your nerves is the computer's voice when she or should I say it reads out your results after each event.. It does get a bit much, especially when getting frustrated on the High Jump.. lol (thats me)
Overall - 7/10
If you love mame or old school arcade titles Track and Field is a must.. I know I spent lots of coins playing this bad boy so 400MS points is nothing to own a classic that's great for gamers of all sizes and ages. The Achievements overall don't seem extremely hard if you put in a little time so for all you achievement hunters out there good luck.. It will be nice to see another Live Arcade game where we can all get the full 200/200 gamerscore points..
