Live Anywhere UpdatePublished by eltsha on Wednesday, January 24, 2007
We haven't heard a lot about Live Anywhere's progress recently. Announced by Bill Gates back at E3 2006, Live Anywhere facilitates play between PC and Xbox 360 gamers, and gives PC gamers access to their Xbox 360 Gamertag on their PC. At a Games for Windows event in San Francisco, we got a chance to see it running with Uno and Shadowrun. Though a hard release date isn't set yet for Live Anywhere, it will ship within the next few months with the aforementioned titles as well as Halo 2. The actual files for Live Anywhere take up only around 5 MB, and it will be shipping on the actual game discs.
When it ships, Live Anywhere will only function while a supported application is open. To log in, users will need to enter their Windows ID and thereafter be able to see their friends list, send both text and voice messages, send game invites, and file player reviews, among other things. While in a supported application, the Home button brings up a guide blade, allowing access to all the functionality. Live Anywhere's first release should include the ability to update an application like Uno simultaneously on the Xbox 360 and PC, so both platforms are prevented from operating with different versions of the same game.
For future Live Anywhere updates, which may or may not be rolled out simultaneously with Xbox Live updates, access to your Gamertag on a PC outside of an application is being worked on. This includes signing on to Xbox Live like you'd sign on to AIM, allowing you to see a friends list and send messages as you work in Word or read the morning's news, as well as access to the Marketplace. We'll have more as it develops.
