fable 3 - buy rent or avoid?? Published on 01-03-2011
" I've now reached my 2nd year on xbox live according to my gamer card and have also just finished fable 3.
I'm planning an in-depth review of fable 3 but thought i'd share some feelings towards it to help you decide whether to buy or not to buy.
Now i've seen some comments on the fact that fable 3 is a bit too similar to fable 2 and I do agree in some extent to this. Fable 2 had big shoes to fill. The first game was epic with its customization and upgrades varied weapons and big bad guys. Fable 2 seemed to be a bit like a teenager. A little confused maybe, not sure where it wanted to go and still with some growing to do.
I felt that the spell system was flawed with the upgrades being nearly useless. I also didnt think there was enough clothes to customise with, the loss of a magic bar made left me bewildered to how there going to balance the game.
There was a lot of things I didnt like about fable 2 but I still loved it, the characters where good, and it was an enjoyable game and so was the dlc.
If fable is the father, and fable 2 is the unruly teenage child then fable 3 has to be the matured young adult to make the father proud.
There seems to have been a lot of love poured into this game and a lot more thought as well. The dialogue is funny, the voice acting is brilliant and its been a long time since ive laughed out loud.
The original was all about how your actions affected the world and how your decisions would make a great impact and there was a good reason to play fable 1 again. Fable 2 lacked that replay factor a little, even though ive played through it a good 3 or 4 times now. There didnt seem to be much impact on the world as I wished to see.
Fable 3 takes it to dizzy new heights of decision making. I thought I was making all the right decisions up to the end, only to find out i'd been too absorbed in being a good king, I never made the hard decisions which meant I saved only 100'000 of the 6.5 million civilians. Woops!
They've taken nearly all the rpg elements of leveling up out of the series and no longer even have a health bar. Which frustrates me. I loved the simple spell upgrades which made your spells more powerful, the different armours to customise your look and defense. I miss the wide variety of weapons too and alot of the old spells.
This is a great action rpg, and I think that theres a lot for those new to series and those familar. It is very similar to fable 2, but I feel this must be because the team wanted to do fable 2 but even bigger and better.
I'm not sure when we'll see fable 4 or if there will be either way I really would like to see the people behind this great triliogy create a more rpgie game. Theres a massive hole in the gaming market for a good action rpg like fable 1 with a ton more armor, weapons, spells, and levelling up. I appreciate that fable 3 is very easily accessed for those who are daunted by menus and upgrades and weapon choices, but come on give me a fun action rpg with a experience system which lets us choose!
imho this game is as good if not better in a lot of ways to the 2nd its a funny engaging game and I cannot wait to play through again and make different decisions. This games been slated in the reviews, but thats the trend isnt it? Cant be honest that it's a great sequel and evolution introduced new and exciting ideas so give it a bad review to be "cool". "
