I was able to format my external hard drive successfully, but when I plug it into my Xbox, it doesn't see any media files. It has the audio and video folders, but nothing's in them. Am I missing a step? I'm not sure if I'm doing the "copy xvid/divx to drive and play your own HD content on the Xbox 360" correctly.

with the most recent dashboard updates M$ locked down divx and xvid from what i can tell you so far.. You must be logged into the xbox live service to watch your xvid/divx..
We had no dramas with it working before the new dashboard came out but since then you must be online im sure.

Negative Hobbs, You need to go Live to install the Xvid codec but once it is installed you can play Xvid for the rest of your life off-line. _________________________________________________________

Hello i just follow the instruction on the front page i download the macdrive reformatted my wd my passport external hard drive and now when i went into my computer to put my movies into the hard drive i dont see the hard drive anymore in my computer. What did i do wrong? Can someone help me out with this problem i am no computer pro so step by step would be great thanks alot.

On linux you only have to choose a programm like (g)parted. The HFS+-Filesystem is supported. Simply create a new partition on the drive and format it with the HFS+-Filesystem. I tested it on an 8GB USB-Stick. This weekend I'll check an 500GB HDD.

On Ubuntu distro of Linux HFS+-Filesystem is support by default. On Windows I have no idea _________________________________________________________
i have just formatted my external drive successfully and my 360 recognises the drive. i can play music but i get an error when trying to watch an .avi
The error is as follows:
"A media update is required to play this content. To get the update, sign into xbox live and play the content again."
"Status code: 51-C00DF236"
My problem is that i can't connect to live because i am banned!
How can i play .avi files please?
Darn, seems like your hooped on this one. Unless you can find a legit MS copy online somewhere. _________________________________________________________

bought kids the 4GB Xbox 360 for Christmas and like too add an USB external 500 GB hard drive ( Pro Drive ) to it so they can download demo's etc... and was wondering if the original post will work for it just so they have storage space. It was cheaper too buy the 500GB then to buy 2 16 GB sticks.

The only reason you would want to follow this tutorial is if you want to watch/store HD 1080/720 movies on the usb drive that are larger than 2GB.
Other than that you can just plug in just about any USB hdd and store movies, pictures and mp3s for use on the 360.
