This topic is so our members can reply to our tutorials on how to Format any External USB HDD for use on the Xbox 360 using either WINDOWS or MAC.
Both tutorials explain why you want to format your USB HDD to the HFS+ format so that you can access files over 4gb on your 360. eg. HD WMV's etc etc..

Will I still be able to hook it up to my non-Max PC and transfer files to it after formatting it this way?
Thanks,
Chad

Yes,
Ozzy and I just formatted his 500gb SEAGATE external hdd and it works on both WINXP and the XBOX 360 now that it is in HFS+ format.
Originally the SEAGATE 500gb external was formatted in NTFS format and the xbox 360 would not read it at all. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:

Man, its just so impressive especially on a HD plasma 1080.
Ive got lots of HDTV shows and other content and it looks great.
I've been searching for this exact thing. How does the 360 "see" this hdd? Can you only access or can you download to it? Via 360.
Thanks for your help.

Hi zasthrus and welcome to 360-HQ..
Only read access is available for a USB HDD on Xbox 360.
You cannot write/save data to the USB HDD at all from your 360.
Microsoft has disabled all writing through the USB ports..
But, you can watch HD wmv, DIVX, XVID etc from USB no probs.

I have got a Mac Mini Intel Core Solo 1.5GHz running OS X Leopard 10.5.2. I formatted an external Maxtor 320GB usb HDD to read on an Xbox 360 using "Disk Utility" under the "Utilties" under "Appliactions".
The settings were:
.select partition tab under the usb hdd
.select '1 Partition' under volume scheme
.give it a meaningful name like 'media'
.under format menu select 'Mac OS Extended'
.under options button select 'Apple Partition Map'
.click 'Apply'
Now copy some media to test on the xbox 360.
all should work.
This is not to go against the excellent guides done by the Windows guys. BOTH METHODS WORK WELL.
Welcome to the site subarudog hope your finding everything ok on the site and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
And yeah the external hard drive with the Mac OS Extended Partition is great. I bought macdrive and did it on windows. Boy I would never go back, Its so much easier then streaming and I can take it with me wherever I go _________________________________________________________ 360-HQ Toolbar | 360-hq Digg news | 360-HQ Active Topics | 360-HQ Boxxet Page | My Setup

Thanks for the update subarudog,
I havent used a mac in years.. If you have any mac software that you find useful for xbox 360 feel free to submit it.. We have a MAC area in our downloads.
I will add the tutorial to our Xbox 360 Tutorials areas for our MAC users.
