Hi dave5987,
It sounds like you haven't backed up the orignal drives firmware.
So with that said, you need to backup the firmware from his original drive.
Within that firmware is a unique key. You copy that key into your new drive.
Here is a tutorial/guide I wrote which will help you:
I figured I would tag onto this thread because my question is along these lines. I have an Xbox 360 that constantly freezes. It has a working Hitatchi which is flashed to Iextreme 1.51. I have given up on the 360 and I was considering buying a broken 360 on Ebay that the only thing wrong with it is the DVD rom won't read disks but otherwise works fine (no RROD). I was wondering if I could replace the the DVD rom in the one purchased from ebay with my Hitachi and keep the existing iextreme 1.51 on it? The problem that I think I might have is that the models might cross just like the original poster asked about. Based on the link you supplied to spoof it I "think" this would work....right? Do I have to reflash the hitachi firmware? I would rather keep that because I can run any game with the drive. I'm a newb so I don't know if you have to reflash the firmware when you spoof it or can you just update the Key and keep the existing firmware. Thanks so much in advance for the reply.

In order for that to work, you would have to dump the firmware from the dvd drive that was originally in the 360 you got from ebay, and get the key from it. From there you would have to insert that key into your hitachi firmware and reflash that to your hitachi.
Basically the answer is yes, you will have to re flash your hitachi drive with firmware containing the new key and spoof.
I believe new xbl checks picks up spoofed drives now and flags the console for ban. (someone correct me if i am wrong on this) _________________________________________________________

Thanks you very much for the reply. That makes sense. However, in the tutorial it doesn't say anything about taking the drive out of MODE B when finished. After I reflash the new key and spoof, do I need to take the drive out of MODE B (back to whatever it was originally) or can I just shut off my PC and XBOX, unhook drive and install it in the new XBOX without doing anything else? Thanks again!!

Not a problem, after your done flashing, all you have to do to exit MODE B is shut down the 360 and the drive will return to its normal working state.
*Don't forget to make backups of your OFW just incase anything goes wrong. _________________________________________________________

Thanks!! I will post my results if you want know. The broken 360 is in the mail now. Appreciate the help.
Oh yea, if you are having troubles or want to check and re check and check some more (like me lol) before you go ahead and start flashing things, the jungleflasher 0.1.77 that is found here in the download section comes with a great tut on the app and how to go about flashing. _________________________________________________________

i got a very similar question so i figured i would just post it in this thread...
my friend gave me an xbox to try and fix and it had the error where it reads games as dvd. so i took it to a guy to replace the drive and he said when he did that the new drive would still only play dvds. he said that the drive in the xbox when i received it was tampered with or something. possibly not the original drive or a prior bad flash, but anyways he said he cannot fix it without the orignal keycode. so my question is... is there a way to get the key from the motherboard or any other possible way to retrieve the code cuz i dont have the original drive. and my friend doesnt know either.
thanks in advance
