Well, a brief history for those who don't know.

I have a 360 that was powerd by an atx with the x clamp fix. Worked, but the dvdrom was crap.

I just got another 360 with 3rlod. Removed the xclamp from the other 360, and used the parts in this one. I uninstalled the atx psu from the 1st 360, since I now have a ms psu.. After removing the atx psu, the 1st 360 won't power on.

The newly aquired 360, worked fine with the x clamp fix. Played GOW for about 3 hours, then played later for about 2 hours. I noticed the fans were running faster than usuall, so I cleaned and reapplied thermo paste to the gpc/cpu.

All was fine at this point. Played Gears for about 4-5 hours, and the fans never sped up. Could hardly hear the thing. Yay I thought. Well suddenly some artifacts began to appear. Was just some little black dots, then it was all out funky. I shut it down, let it set for 20-25 minutes, and turned it back on. E-74. Just Great.

I search around for info about the E-74 code, and find that placing a shim like a washer, penny, ect.. on the ram chips under the gpu heatsink can fix it in some cases. I use two pennys just to see, and when I boot it back up, the E-74 is gone, but is replaced by the 3rlod again.

Well i figure i just need to adjust the tightness on the heatsink. I go from very little pressure, to nice and tight. Still don't work. After playing with it for awhile, I see that the error code is 0020.

I've cleaned, reapplied paste, adjusted tightness for the heatsinks, did the bake trick, which reflowed all the solder, everything I can, but nothing works.

I'm very ticked right now. Two 360's, and problems with both. I'd like to focus on the one with the 0020 error right now, but am at a loss what more to do.

Thanks Darth, I've bookmarked that tut, and I'll give it a shot. It's worth a try as absolutley nothing else will work. I had no problem getting it to work at first, until the pesky e-74, then after the pennies on top of the ram the 0020. I think what happened is I overtightened the heatsinks. They were really tight.

Right now though, I've decided to divert my attention to the other 360, the one that won't turn on with the oem psu. I decided to hook the atx back up to it just to check it out and it works. Don't understabd why it will only work with the atx psu though.

I have a thread for that issue here http://www.360-hq.com/postt3846.html if you want to check it out, and maybe have an idea.

If anyone has any other ideas to try out with this 360, Please do post them. I will get back to working on this one, just going to take a short break from it before I end up putting it under my truck tire.

That looks like a very good tut Darth,

I've never seen that one or that idea before and it seems like the best idea to come around in a long time and could possible even permanently fix a 360.

Best Regards,
Frozenfire1

I plan on doing it to my xbox because I have keep adjusting the tightness of the screws every few weeks for it to work. Once this snow stops I'll go out and get the foam and post my results.

caught 0110 and then 0020.

Depending on what you're using for washers between the board and the heatsinks....I was lacking thin enough vinyl washers and cut some small squares from an ice cream pale. Yeah, I know, ghetto huh?

Anyways, I also used some 1mm washers. Kept getting 2 rings for Heatsinks not making contact. Removed the metal and went with just the pale parts as a "just in case".

Another "just in case" I double sided taped my overly thick vinyl washers(about 2mm or 2 pennies) to the default white foamies on the bottom of the board).
After that is when I got my 0020, and I had to loosen the GPU heatsink.

Ran fine after a GPU reflow(used old satellite cards around the GPU heatsink and left the fans plugged in so that it could get adequately hot.(I went 20 minutes exactly after reading that the most common flaw is not overheating for quite long enough, from llama.)

Put the case together and got 0020 again. Opened it and it ended up I loosened the center-most DVD drive screw just a bit, then buttoned it all back up. Ran fine after that.

In summation:
If you fix something, make sure you didn't break it again with another process. I had to reflow twice, once due to too much torque on screws. Lucky I didn't have to do it again after the DVD drive screw. I actually tried to reflow several times over all, but I think I only accomplished it twice.

Sorry if that turned into something resembling China's great wall, but I learn the best by seeing what steps other people have taken in depth. Hope it may help.
