basically a codec compresses video/audio so that it takes up less space and a codec can also decompress video/audio so you can watch/listen to it
for example windows media player compresses videos into a .wmv file and then they use their codec to play it back to the user
another common example is mp3, first the music is encoded into an mp3 file with the mp3 codec and then your media player (itunes, wmp, winamp) decompresses it with the mp3 codec so you can listen to it through your speakers

also i dont think anyone said it yet but for media center to work on your 360 you will need to set up your network with a windows based media center pc. Such as windows media center addition or windows vista i think all version of vista support media center but just windows xp will not work or 2000 etc.

you can do it that way which works great, or you can use TVersity which I use and also works great

Really I can't believe that people are taking apart thier 360's and voiding thier warranties when the 360's have such a high failure rate. As for me I will wait to do anything to my 360 as long as it is under warranty. Now if I happened to run across one that was cheap and had been opened already then yeah I would probably put new fans in it and a clear case. But it would have to be really cheap. But when it is all said and done I think the 360 is just fine the way it is as far as dashboard features and such. And as as far as running other systems games on the 360 hmmm....risk bricking my 360 system trying to put super mario bros on it or just get off my lazy ass and go buy a nintendo for 10 or 15 bucks. Not much of a question there. Sorry but emulating games on other systems is just plain stupid to me especially when it means risking breaking my expensive 360. _________________________________________________________
If you take your 360 apart right you can add all the stickes and such back on when it breaks and send it in and it wont look like you ever took them off.
As for buying a nintendo, they are about $45 now. If you already have a 360/xbox, why not mod it to play a nintendo game instead of spending another $45 on top of the $350? _________________________________________________________
I don't know where you buy your nintendo 8 bit or any other nintendo systems for that matter but I buy them in pawn shops and they sell all day long for 10 to 15 dollars. Also I am pretty sure that the microsoft warranty sticker is not the only way that Microsoft knows if you opened your system or not. I have heard of several people carefully taking off thier stickers and opening thier 360 and then later on the 360 rrod and they sent the system in with the sticker intact and Microsoft sent it back saying that the system had been opened and that is what caused the rrrod. I would just be careful and think carefully before opening your 360 system. _________________________________________________________
