I'm #7 in line for a Nintendo Wii at the local GameStop... sweet! Two new systems over a three-day period!
When's the HD-DVD XBOX 360 add-on coming? At GameStop, they thought the price was going to be around $300... anyone heard a projected price? $300 seems pretty dang steep if you ask me. Why not just buy a stand-alone HD-DVD player for $200 more??? _________________________________________________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

I just went by GameStop about 45 minutes ago... manager insists the pricing she heard at a sales meeting was like $299. At that price, it doesn't make sense to get the add-on. You can't use the 360 and the HD-DVD add-on on separate monitors, but you could if you bought a standalone.
I might be willing to pay close to $300 more for a 360 that had an integrated HD-DVD, but not for an ugly add-on box... unless somehow you could easily use the HD-DVD with a computer, but I thought the add-on box was to use some of the processing power of the 360... maybe not. _________________________________________________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

It was confirmed at X06 that it would be $199 and come with the Universal Multimedia Remote (the official MS Big remote), and also come with a copy of King Kong on HD-DVD. Rumors are that it will launch on Nov 17th, but I would think they would go ahead and release it on the 14th to beat out the PS3 by a few days.
I posted a news story about it back when they released the info on Sept 27th, here's what they had to say.

Most Affordable Way for Xbox 360 Owners to Jump Into the Next-Generation of DVD
At X06, exciting details about the highly anticipated Xbox 360 HD DVD Player were also revealed. Available in mid-November 2006 in North America for $199.99 (estimated retail price)*, in the U.K., France and Germany for €199.99 (£129.99) (estimated retail price)* and other territories in 2007, the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player comes with the Universal Pictures blockbuster film Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” on HD DVD (for a limited time) and the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote. Users can just add Xbox 360 HD DVD Player to Xbox 360 to create the ultimate home-theater experience.
“The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player is the best high-definition movie experience and value on the market,” Moore said. “The reviews, the word of mouth and the consumer response have all been crystal clear — HD DVD is the format of choice. We’re not forcing movie technology on game players but are instead letting them choose how to personalize their experiences. If they want HD DVD, there’s no better value out there.”
The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player offers up to six times higher resolution than DVD, and as part of the fall 2006 console update all Xbox 360 consoles will have the ability to output native resolution 1080p games and movies. Users can enjoy blockbuster HD DVD releases, with more than 150 titles available by the holidays from major movie studios including HBO, Paramount Pictures, StudioCanal, Universal Studios, New Line Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Thanks for the info sjohn! I really want the add-on.

Well, I hate to go against an industry pseudo-insider (GameStop manager) - she just got back from some big meeting in Texas- but I believe sjohn is (or should be) correct. At $300, MS can't hope to sell too many. If they REALLY want to support HD-DVD format, a $300 add-on is NOT the way to go.
Thanks for your input, sjohn! _________________________________________________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

I'll check with the local eb manager who was at that very same meeting, to see what all they said about the hd-dvd, but what I gave you came directly from microsoft, so I'd believe it over anything.
BTW, the local GS Store Manager started a list of names and phone numbers of people interested in pre-ordering a PS3. So what did she do just before the pre-order date? She decided NOT to call anyone on the list!!! One of the other employees knew I was really interested in the PS3 and gave me a call to alert me (I 've been in there about 4-5 times per for the past 6 months, always asking "You taking PS3 pre-orders yet?" or saying "I'm here to put a deposit down on a PS3". I think they got sick of hearing me ask, so they made sure I got on the list. I did the same thing at Walmart prior to the 360 release. I got the first 360 of their second shipment. One of the girls there tipped me off that a truck had just come in that might have a 360 on it. She came back a little while later with one... no waiting in line!
