It's hard to believe that they left their servers open for Dev consoles to get information like this. It seems like a huge flaw in security and I think it may warrant a lawsuit.
Why would devs even need information like this in the first place? Seems really shadey to me. _________________________________________________________

well on the up and up i heard things about xbox 360 consoles that are banned can now be unbanned who knows how long this will last and if there will be a reban of the consoles that were banned guess it was a mistake on part of ms. Or a way to get ps3 fans to pull out there banned xbox's in the closet to play on there network ha _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!
Its gotta be a mistake on M$ part. Banning is the only real deterent they have to modding and if they start unbanning, people will have nothing lose in modding their 360. M$ or some other 3rd party should start their own paid PS3 network that would be a real kick in the nuts Sony. Its surprising considering how good of a job Sony did on security with the PS2 then to see such a lapse with the PS3. Wonder if this will drive down prices on the PS3, since one of their big claims against the XBOX was the free online, and now its gone. I also wonder when the other shoe is gonna drop and we see a class action lawsuit against Sony for negligence.
Should be interesting to see how this turns out for sure. _________________________________________________________

So if this lawsuit for the 77 million sony customers is successful, i take it sony will be fined? Nedless to say the 77 million gamers won't see a penny but someone else will get the money.
If that is correct, its just another way for people to legally make money out of illegal activities (team xecuter, DVD-DL manufacturers and many others)! _________________________________________________________ Opinions are like arse holes, everybody has one and your's stinks.
Sony will settle, they have no choice by their own admission they were negligent. Since this is a civil issue no fines can be handed down in the lawsuit, but thats not to say the FCC, CRTC and others arent gonna smack Sony with hefty fines. Chances are you'll see PSN go paid and all the people members previous get free lifetime to make up for it and maybe a free game or two. I cant see it going beyond that since if each plaintiff is awarded $1000 we're talking about a 77 billion dollar judgement. Maybe this will be the push Sony needs to approach M$ about running on the same network and allowing cross console play (im sure its easily doable)
Sony is now contradicting an earlier press release and saying the credit card info was encrypted. I guess this is just an attempt to ass cover now that a lawsuit has been filed.

On the subject of Sony and why I hate them! My old lady bought a Sony Wega LCD Rear Projection Tv back in 05 or so for around 3000 bucks,it has purrple splotches all over the screen caused by dirt being sucked in by the two fans on the inside to keep everything cool as it gets really hot in there! There was a class action lawsuit a few years back and Sony did not admit to any wrong doing as they did knowingly sell faulty products as it later came out from past employees! I have read stories of people who have spent upwards of 5000 or more on these tvs and only being offered a thousand off a new tv,I myself will never buy anything from Sony even though I didn't buy the tv! They do not stand behind there products from what I have seen,I will never pick up a Playstation ever agian! I hate Sony and I do hate MS but rather pay for Xbox Live than have a free sh!T service from Sony! _________________________________________________________

Yeah, i got that email:
Quote:
Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.
We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.
