1337 = Leet like in Elite. Meaning the best...
It is a language started by the early hackers and now most avid computer people use it like most people use LOL OMG WTF and so on....

They use letters and symbols to make words instead of actually letters so that when most people read it they think it is a bunch of garbled junk and dont care to know if it really means something...
