I've never gotten a 360 and am now looking to get a used one. Ultimately I want to hack it, add a bigger drive, et cetera. Is there a particular model I should look for (or is better/easier to work with/mod/hack) than another? I remember reading that a mandatory M$ system update was trashing some units, and they were exchanging dead 360s for some users a while back. Is this something I'd have to worry about in getting a used unit?
So many questions...but I really need an update on the 'state of the platform.'
It really depends on how far you want to mod it. If you only want to flash the DVD drive, then you can buy any Xbox. If you want to Jtag the Xbox (which opens up the entire console and allows you to install 3rd party software) you will need to get an older Xbox that has a very old version of the Xbox dashboard on it. I believe the dashboard has to before the big dashboard update in late 2009. _________________________________________________________

anything with hdmi and made before aug 2011 you can hack does not have to have a old dashboard and still be able to run 3rd party software and that. Can be on any dashboard its called Reset Glitch Hack aka RGH. This mod allows you to add up to a 2tb external hd and load games off the hd and everything you can think of almost ha.
Or you can do a firmware mod which allows you to burn backups and play them on discs _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

dartht33bagger, Scarface--
Thanks for the info--you've answered my questions. Scarface, as to the manufacturing date, I'm guessing there's a label with the date printed on it somewhere on the Xbox itself?

Yes, it's on the back of the Xbox360, it's a big label near the HDMI port and Ethernet port _________________________________________________________
