VG247.com is reporting: In an essay on why now’s an exciting time to be involved in the games industry, VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi’s stuck his leg in the sand on Cloud gaming - he reckons it’s pretty much a done deal.
“OnLive doesn’t have to kill the console makers to succeed,” said the journo.
“It will become a wildly successful company if it can simply establish video games on demand as a viable channel. And even if OnLive itself doesn’t make it, it is almost inevitable that game cloud computing will thrive.”
OnLive “expects to launch a games on demand service in the fall that is very much like Xbox Live,” Takahashi added.
“You will be able to play high-end games on low-end computers. That’s unbelievable. Many people have reacted to this by saying it is impossible. But it is no more impossible than 2D-Boy creating The World of Goo and getting a bestseller out of it.”
OnLive was announced at GDC this year to general disbelief that the service can work.
What does everyone think of the Onlive. Will it compete with Xbox live?

Seems like the question right now is will it work at all, i know a few guys including myself have put in to beta test it so the interest is there but the one thing i feel might not fly is not having any thing in your hand to show you own that game.
With my Zune i had payed for a bunch of music though Microsoft service and then when i switched my account to a different computer i lost it all, when i called about it they said they could see ware i payed for the music but could not give it back to me.
If they can find a way to make you feel like there is no way to lose the games you have payed for then i don't see why it wouldn't be a real competitor in the console wars.

I'm sure it will be popular but i have been in the games industry for years now and i can't see it making a huge impact.
In Japan years ago i nearly won a contract to implement set top box type gaming systems where the user would purchase their games.. The contract never went ahead. Im hoping this system lasts.
Good luck to onlive.. Hopefully it will be a good competitor and bring some pricing wars back to gaming systems. ie. Online Fees, Games & DLC pricing.
Its a great idea but there are just a few problems that are really holding it back.
1) Must constantly be connected to the internet, because you are running the game from their computers.
2) If you have slow net / a couple people on in the house, you will really notice a lag and it will make the game a lot less enjoyable.
3) To play online games you are going to probably need good internet because you have to send the game info as well as the online data.
4) You must pay for the monthly service, and the games, seems a little iffy to me, they should just make it one service and you play as much as you like.
5) If your net cuts out there goes your game, and lets face it net drop offs do happen and sometimes a couple times a week.
6) If you have only decent net you can only do standard def assuming that you have all your nets bandwidth (again someone else on a computer, etc)
7) They should just make it hard drive based, you save it to your hard drive, etc. But then the thing will be a lot more expensive because it has to have all the hardware to run it
No game mods, and PC gamers know mods really do add a lot to the game and can help keep a game fresh for years (my one friend played morrowind for 4 years and was constantly doing new things)
9) DLC? will people get it? etc.
Personally I don't think it stands a chance even competing with the current sales of the ps3. I just don't think this is what the market wants, not in its current form at least. They need to make it something that is accessible to everyone and not cut into their bandwidth to stream a video feed of a game with the data for the controller input. I think if they make it have a bit of hardware, and you download it to a hard drive or buy a SD (or similar flash card) with the game on it, it might work. But this will greatly hinder the cheap price of the machine.
I know I won't be getting one and I really do can't wait to see until it fails.
Best Regards,

Blah, I like to have the games I purchase in my hands at all times.. I wonder if there will be limits to how many computers you can play these games on, sort of like Microsoft Windows activation process, limited to 5 computers or some shit like that? Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a great idea but I worry that if something goes bonkers with my account I'll lose my purchases similar to the problems I've had in the past with Itunes recovering purchased music. Authorizing and De authorizing computers all the times sucks the big one. _________________________________________________________ Xbox V1.3

Dont know yet, but I did sign up to be a beta tester for the system.

I have heaps of mates with 360's
We all get the latest games when they come out, but I like shooters and my mates likes driving games, sports game, rythm games etc. We swap some games to see if we like a certain title enough to buy it.
You cant do that with Onlive
I can see the potential for a system like this, but if you have an average net connection or no net connection then you are screwed.
I will sit back and see how this one pans out
BTW The first post. Do you reckon they have employed a guy to hit game websites, signup as a user called onlive and then post info about the system. _________________________________________________________ Mattster
