my console was manufactored in july of 06 so i have no warranty. ok so a few weeks ago i got the open tray error. so i ordered a new hitatchi disk drive and swapped the chip from my old drive into my new one so i wouldent have to flash my firmware. once i got it all back in it still dident work. so i took it all back apart and discovered there was a tear in the main ribbon wire (one that goes from the chip to the lazer) so i replaced it with the ribbon wire off the new chip. after i got it all back together it worked. after a few hours of gameplay i noticed that the the game was laggy so i took it all back apart and figured it was just the ribbon causing all the problems i could just use the older drive. after i swapped again it dident work, same error. so ive tried swapping them a few times and nothing. now the tray will only open when i press the eject button when the console is off and it wont open when its booted.
any tips before i throw it out of my car at 100 mph?

Well looks like it could be a couple different things: Try replacing the rubber band that helps the tray eject out and back in take it from the newer one that you bought since you have the old one put back together.
This will allow the tray to open and close now if this is not your problem and it is trying to read the game and gives you the open tray check to make sure that ribbon cable to the laser is hooked up right if it is clean the laser off with some rubbing alcohol then test it if that dont work swap the laser from the other drive and put it on that one.
If same problem the laser from the one u just bought might of got messed up some how. If none of these work you could get a digital meter and do a pot tweak on the laser to see if that will help with anything. But its one of the two problems known for this that i have fixed many times. I dont think it would be anything else. If after you are done and want to try the pot calibration as a last option just put in the search engine xbox 360 pot calibration and you should get something i dont know if we have a tut on that.

its not a lazer issue or a rubber band issue. it does the same thing on both drives (old and new) all im doing is swapping the chips.

lmao did u test the lasers with a mulimeter and see what each give open tray errors 99% of the time are from the laser and if your having trouble with it not ejecting that is the rubber band. Your so called new drive is actually a refurb maybe had a new laser put in. but if you said it was working before maybe your board is going out or maybe check all the cables see if there is something wrong with any of the cables, my bud had one that went to the laser nothing looked wrong on it and then he got another one from me put it on there and it worked again. Im not sure what the problem could be now if you sure its not those two things. if the drive opens when i press the button before turning on the console then its obviously not the rubber band

Try this once if you keep a game in there and it opens every time when ever it is the rubber band or something new that i have not messed with. if your having a game reading problem still its likely its the laser and yes this could happen on a replacement drive. Most of my customers get benq drives put in instead but you are not trying to flash urs so it is a bit different.
If now it does the same thing with the open tray only at start up/ powering on then it might be the motor if you switch it back to the one you just bought and it does it then maybe it is something to do with your married dvd drive board pcb board i should say and you might want to pull the key and flash it to the hitachi as you can still do this and not have the hacked firmware on to flash it to the new drive you can put the original on it. Or Sell the console if it is jtagable you can sell it for about $100 get another $100 and buy a new console. Even if its not jtagable you should still be able to get some money for it.
The new consoles are very nice and it looks like they might have fixed the issue with the red ring problem as they went back to the old heatsinks and that could be a sign that they dont need the addon heatsink no more and no more red light unless you keep it on the carpet every time you game and that. I am trying to think what else it could be it could be stuck in the back of my head i just cant think of anything else bud. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!
