if your dashboard is like 7171 or lower you could do a jtag to pull the key and everything otherwise it will be a dvd drive tell they figure out a new way to jtag the consoles with the newer dashboard. You can go to settings dashboard and in there you will see the kernal version if its higher then what i posted then it cant be jtaged its 7xxx and below that can be done. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Hello again. Ok so I got the Xbox from Ebay and it has a BenQ drive. I was able to get the firmware off of it after MUCH trial and error (I almost gave up). My computer has crashed many times during the process. Anyway, I followed the instructions in the tutorial mentioned above (injected the new Key from the BenQ and Spoof to the Hitachi drive) and I keep getting the "Play DVD" when I fire up the Xbox. I even tried with a stock firmware of the Hitachi with the BenQ Key and Spoof. Still no dice ("Play DVD"). The BenQ firmware reads that it's the stock firmware BUT I'm wondering if someone had switched the DVD ROM and stuck this one it this XBOX before it was sent out to me. From what I've read, there is no way to tell if this was the original drive from the Xbox. I've pretty much exausted all my ideas at this point. Anyone have any ideas on something to try ...maybe I should flash with something other than Firmware Toolbox?
The Hitachi ROM version is: Hitachi-GDR3120L-0078
The BenQ ROM version is: Benq-VAD6038-64930C
The BenQ is the broken drive and I'm trying to replace it with the working Hitachi.
Thanks for the help!

you want to make sure that the benq key is the source key and then for target you want the hacked hitachi firmware spoof it
hook up the hitachi get it in mode be which if you have flashed it correctly you do the half tray trick were you power it on eject it then power off and manually close it half way then turn it back on then fire up jungleflasher go to hitachi area you might have to restore stock first then flash ixtreme then after all is done you should be good.
I would test the original benq drive see if you can tweak the pot on the laser to get it to run that way u can see if it plays a original game if it says play dvd for that it might not be the right drive for that system. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Thanks a lot for the reply!! I started to look into tweaking the pot as you suggested so I took the DVD rom apart again. One thing that I forgot to mention is that this drive was sooo screwed up when I got it. It wouldn't read at all in the beginning (I wouldn't even make a noise) so I took it apart to look at it. Inside it was all covered in oily dust!! I noticed that the thin ribbon cable that connects to the laser was torn! So I found another one on ebay and I finally got that yesterday. So after I installed the new ribbon cable I fired up the xbox and it the DVD rom was grinding like crazy!!! I took it a part and found that the white plastic clip that connects to the axel thing that makes the laser move up and down was unscrewed. I found that the screw was stripped. I found another screw and got it secured. Now it struggles like hell to read but it is trying. Then it just gives up and says open tray. However, I noticed that the manufacturing date of the DVD Rom is July 2007. The Manufacturing date of the Xbox is May 2009! That means that drive was sitting around for two years before it was installed in the xbox? I highly doubt Microsoft has that much of a surplus. It pretty much guarantees that this is not the original drive. Your thoughts on this?
Thanks again for the replies!!

looks like you awnsered your own question lol but you could try tweaking the pot its the right one if your looking at it from were the dvd tray opens at you and if your looking at it were the tray opens away from you and your behind the drive its the left one.
If that xbox was made around march april 2009 or later there should of been a lite-on drive in there. This is about the time they started putting lite-on drives in mandatory before those months they would put them in if they were xbox repairs done by microsoft even now if you send them in you will be getting a fresh Lite-on 9 series drive coming back so what i think is there was a lite-on in there maybe newer model and the dude tried a mra hack and messed up then slapped a benq in there like nothing happen and sells it out.
If you have a older dashboard you could do the jtag if not. Try tweaking the pot to about 4.01-4.30 in that area and see if it will read if it shows the game then it works. If you have teamviewer 6 www.teamviewer.com download with install with full access i could tap into your computer with you and help you go through the jungleflasher to make sure the key was pulled from the benq drive right and then spoof it to that hitachi and see if it works if it does the play dvd then its not the right key.
Yea you got to watch when you buy stuff on ebay like these you never know what you getting and it might not be able to be fixed 80% of the time if not more it cant be. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

The dashboard is the version that came out after Microsoft got rid of the version with the blades. It's not the latest version that is for sure. The latest version looks different. I'm not sure how I can tell otherwise. Any recommendations on getting started with a jtag? The xbox itself seems pretty solid other than not having the correct drive in there. I suppose that the DVD Rom key could be wrong. I had to try so many times to get the Benq to recognize in my PC and only one time I got it to the point where I could dump the firmware and it hung up about 50-75% of the way through. However, I could open the firmeware up with firmware toolbox and it didn't complain. The DVD Rom key had the same number of characters so I think its good. Not that it matters because it's probably wrong anyway. Let me know about the jtag when you get a chance.
I'll try the pot tweak and thanks for letting me know which screw it is. I wasn't sure since there is two.
Thanks again.

With the xbox on go to System Settings then go to Console Settings then scroll down to System Info. Your kernel version is shown there if its under 7371 should be able to jtag the console if its higher like 8498 and higher you will not be able to jtag the console.
If it cant be jtaged not worth knowing info on it as it wont be able to be done
If you are having problems with dumping the firmware there is many reasons being are you going off the sata port on the computer or a sata control card if its a sata control card try a different port and make sure to uninstall the drivers for the control card. I would recommend Jungleflasher period for benq drives jungleflasher newest version. Make sure port io is installed correctly if your on xp with vista and windows 7 there is certain work arounds you need to do to make jungleflasher work correctly. Dont try flashing that benq drive yet so atleast you can pull the key off it. if you flash it with the key being half ass or anything you might not be able to ever recover unless your console is jtagable.
I am willing to help if you download that teamviewer and that to the computer that you are modding with i can then make sure everything is installed correctly otherwise hard to tell exactly the problems and how to fix them if i cant see ha. but ill try my best. My yahoo is scarface_hq and skype hq_scarface if im available i will message you just let me know who you are. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Hey thanks for the reply. I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I totally gave up with the xbox and decided to move on. I was spending too much time trying tinker with it and I was frustrated! I may pick it back up again in a month or so. Thanks for trying to help me!!!
