I have looked around both this forum and others and have been unable to find any posts of this problem so I apologise if this has been posted before. (I did find many similar problems, but they did not help me solve this one).

I am trying to update my console with the new system update in order to play with kinect.

So I downloaded the update from xbox.com and transferring it to a flash device's root folder. Upon putting the flash device into the xbox I am prompted that an update has been detected and to restart. Upon rebooting I get the message:

Update Required

To proceed, security and program updates are required. System updates will be added to ensure security and proper functionality. If you decline, you will be returned to the Xbox Dashboard. Do you want to accept the update?

After selecting "Yes, update now" the update begins and almost immediately I get the message:

Update Failed

Can't process the update. If the problem persits, go to www.xbox.com/support.

I get no further information regarding the nature of the error. However, If I reboot, the xbox no longer recognises a system update on the flash drive unless I delete it and add it again. I have tried clearing the cache on my hdd. Formatting the hdd. Booting the xbox whilst holding the sync button to clear any failed updates. Alternative sources of the update. And also installing the old update again in case this update was added incorrectly and was blocking the new one.

None of these things have worked and I am all out of ideas. Xbox support have been no help as they just see/hear the word update and begin to tell me how to download it.

I would appreciate any help anybody can give me and if any further information is needed just ask.

Thank you.

First at all, for your quick answer! Smile
I cant update using LIVE... But IMO there is nothing to do if you try to update online, using a pen or a CD/DVD: it´s the system by itself who refuse to install any software. I tried to update with an original game and a dirty disc error pop up...
I tried also to update using the same version (2.0.8955.0). Some guys had problems as well after a failure installation proccess, and they finally sorted out using exactly the same version which failed.
Because of that, I downloaded all the updates (I found a site with all the updates last week!!) , and tried to install them one by one. Even the beta versions fails... I discarded this issue, because the only update than actually doesnt fails is my actual version. The dashboard starts the proccess, reboot the console, and everything work just fine.
A few updates (the oldest ones), I couldnt install at all. The console doesnt recognise them. Maybe they are too old for the actual dashboard.
BTW, I deleted the cache memory, and clear old updates up using RB, RL, X, RB, RL, X in the storage menu before every try...
I really appreciate your help, guys! And thanks again for share your knowledge with me!

this was talked about earlier, check this out

as you can see, a lot of us had been in the same situation as you. Sounds like you need to get the laser replaced first. Even is you fixed the update the console would only be good to stream stuff with. I have never heard the usb update has worked, only by disc method.
Good Luck
Delta
