ok heres a good head scratcher..

I bought this Elite from a guy whom had it sent in to MS to fix the RROD. Now around 3 or so years later, BAM I get the 3RROD. I've been working on this one all week.

This is what I did.. Took it apart, did the xclamp repair on the gpu putting Artic silver 5 on the gpu and cpu. Did the penny replacement on the little chips. But i've had issue with the screen being purply and scrolling. Also having the 2RROD after i got the 3RROD in check.

After readin about the heat gun, i took my hand torch i bout al wallyworld and torched the gpu heatsink for about 35 seconds. cooled it down, put it all together..

Got to a frozen boot screen, restarted it and now my controller doesn't control the xbox? I use my dvd remote and can open and close the tray but nothing on the controller???

SO I dare any of you smart @55 smarties to figure this one out...lol...

Thanks people... have an awesome day.

How controlled of a burn was the hand torch? You might have burned up the wireless controller receiver.

Either that, or the xbox is still not 100% fixed.

ok, so i turned the console off let it sit. then turned it back on and am playing a game. weird.

About 10min into the game i get the 3rrod again. Tried this trick i saw about sticking qtips in the fans to let it overheat to reseat the gpu. Did that and am letting it sit again.

I am really thinking it is going out. Hopefully it will work long enough to fool the local gamestore so i can get some trade in credit towards the new slim/.

Torch gun? That was the worst possible thing you could do. Haha, heat gun it is the best thing to do. And looks like you burnt something out, take a look for burnt parts and let us know.

not an actual torch gun. its one of those "Burnzomatic" lighters that uses butane and has a torch like flame from wallyworld, its near the checklanes at the cigarette area.

I used it on the gpu heatsink waveing it around for about 30 seconds. It totally fixed my video error.

My friend sent me this guide, what do yall think about it.?

says something about a heat gun or something, using it on the ramm, gpu, cpu, and south bridge..

Yeah, I just repaired my JTAG from the error E74 with a heat gun. Basically do this, take both your heat sink's off, and use the heat gun on low and go over the CPU, GPU, RAM chip's and the south bridge with it, but do it in a circular pattern. If you apply direct heat for too long, it might melt something and make it worse. Anyways, do that for about 15-20 seconds. Now, do the same to the front for about 15 seconds max. Don't apply direct heat to the capacitors! If you want you can cover them in tin foil, but I am sure as long as you do the proceedure all right it will be fine. Let it cool for about 15-30 minutes and try it out.

Now, about the controller, try a different wireless controller, if that still doesent work, try a wired controller. If anything was wrong, it would give you a error.

You could also do this - X-clamp fix with screws. Tighten the GPU heatsink up just tight enough to be touching the GPU. Don't put in the fan shroud and keep the fan out of the housing. Put the DVD drive in (doesn't need to be hooked up) and then lay the fans so that one of the fans is blowing air onto the CPU heatsink and one is blowing air on top of the DVD drive. This way the CPU will still be cool but the GPU will be able to overheat.

Then turn on your xbox and let it overheat for about 15 (that's how long I wait). Then turn the box off, pull the board out and tighten down all the screws on the GPU as tight as you can without breaking the board. Then let your xbox cool for about 30-40 minutes and loosen the GPU screws some if you want (I don't). It should hopefully be working for you unless your torch gun screwed it up badly.

I do it this way to fix my old RROD all the time. Each time it lasts me about 2 weeks before I have to do it again, so I don't think it is a permanent fix.

All the tricks talked about are an attempt to get good contact again plus lessen the heat issue of course.

If it works with no errors for a few hours or even a few weeks then the GPU may need to be reflowed. There's no prefect way to do this with all the techniques the regular guys can do. It can be hit or miss but you might get lucky. The perfect fix is using a reflow workstation designed for the very purpose of reflowing the solder or the removal / addition of 'microprocessors'.

I have been able to reflow a couple of 360's including my first 360. It still runs perfectly, I gave it to my father.

It should be noted that even if you have the gpu reflowed, it will be prone to overheating by default design, so you must take the extra steps to try and remove the heat or lessen it.

if you have the screws to tight for the xclamp that could cause the game to freeze after a few mins or with in a few seconds dont forget about this. and if they are too loose they will do the same. they got to be just right.
