I recently purchased a 360 (off ebay..used) and everything works fine except the fact that it will not open or close (the disc tray) while it is vertical.
This is a HUGE annoyance since the system takes up so much more room while not vertical... it just looks sloppy to me.
Does anyone know about why this may be.. or have a similar problem?
Any help is wanted thanks.

My friend had the exact same problem, never found a fix for it, he just exchanged it for a new one _________________________________________________________
My samsung drive does that, but it doesn't bother me because mine is on its side 99% of the time anyways. I've never seen a fix for it either. _________________________________________________________

well this is how you can fix this problem.
there is a small rubber band that opens and closes the draw, you will need to take it out and rub it between you hands till it get's warm then put it back and it will work fine.....
Ive done this on loads of drives in computers and Xboxes....
Or if you can find one put in a new band. _________________________________________________________
I thought that was only if your drive wouldn't open at all because of a broken band? I'll have to try it though. _________________________________________________________

Not to undermine you bro, but i find that a quicker and better fix for the rubber band is to take it out and wash it under the tap with cold water. You see, what happens is the drive gets overworked and over time microscopic dust fibers get onto the band causing it to slip and not let the dvd laser drop so the tray can open. When it get's washed, well, obviously it's now clean, lol.
To make sure the problem is rectified i also get a Qtip and wet both ends, under the tap/in your mouth, whatever you want, lol, and use 1 end to clean the inside of big wheel and the 2nd end to clean inside of the tiny wheel. With the Qtip being wet, you'll definitely see the dirt coming off the wheels. If you want you can always use a second DRY Qtip to go over the wheels if ya want.
Then simply use your needle nose pliers to slip the band back on, screw the drive back together and it'll work first time...every time. _________________________________________________________ Predtech

When you keep saying "drive" i assume you mean the disc drive correct? Like where the games are put in and taken out..?
Im looking at it and the surface looks clean i dont even know where to begin taking it apart to clean a rubber band?!
