Hi All,

I would like to get a 360. A second generation xbox 360. Probably 2nd hand. If i will have the choice, which DVD drive should i get, Samsung or Hitachi?
Also i hear a lot of horror stories about overheating. Is this problem already fixed? Or should i better wait 6 months until MS releases a new chip, one that heats less?
Finally, HD is not a requirement for me.

Thanx.

Hi msbox

Welcome to HQ Smile

Although I'm a little confused about the "Second Generation xbox 360" if you could get your hands on the New BenQ VAD6038 - New DVD Drive in Xbox360 They have been reported to run Super Quite.

I have the v78 Hitachi a little noisy, not bad though and Doesn't seem to run that hot. Some general advise to assure longer life, Always lay it on it's side and make sure you have good ventilation! Don't stuff the 360 in a small entertainment center cube with no air flow!

Other than that, if you go 2nd hand try not to get one to old because I've also read that the lasers do Occasionally wear and need replaced!

Feel free to Ask any more questions, the HQ members here are friendly and eager to help

regards, jfhi

Thanx jfhi, i appreciate.
When i said "second generation", i meant an xbox that was manufactured recently, a couple of months old or so. Not those ones that were launched for christmas 2005.
You are mentionning a Benq drive. Do you know if there is a flash for it already?
Flashing IS a requirement for me though...Smile

Hi msxbox,

Welcome to HQ..

I hope you enjoy your stay here and learn what you need to so that you can safely purchase your xbox 360 etc..

One thing i would like to mentioned is that we do NOT support game piracy on 360-hq.com.. Sure its fine to backup your original games and we will help you with that BUT.. If you speak about illegal downloading of games etc which you DO NOT own you will hear from us quickly.

Since out site is in the limelight we want all our members to support software developers and purchase their games..

I myself for a fact only support backups due to how expensive they are and how easily they are scratched.

anyway, with all that said.. Im sure youll meet plenty of nice guys here to help you.

talk soon

As far as I know there is CURRENTLY no FirmWare Flash for the Ben-Q

But Maximus toolbox makes Hitachi's a snap to flash with the right SATA Chip! My v78 Hitachi Flash with OnBoard SATA and NForce4 Chipset went smooth!

Anyway the sammy's are supposed to be easy as well "With the right Software Tools and Proper Hardware.

You'll Probably just have to Buy a 360, Then figure out the rest Depending on what you Get.

That's what I did.

Regards jfhi

forahobby, you may have a lot of posts, but you also have quite an attitude. Who said something about piracy?
I know very well the rules here, no need to lecture me.
But thanx anyway, even if i dont see the point of your post.

Don't take it personally, we just feel the need to put a disclaimer out there whenever firmware modding is mentioned. Honestly that's the only reason for doing the mod, we just make sure that it is known to whoever may visit that we only support it in a way to protect your investment. He's the owner of these sites and has quite a bit to lose if something were to go awry in that case, just a bit better to be safe than sorry as they say.

On to answer your questions, both current drives have their pros and cons, the hitachi seems a bit easier to work with, however it's firmware isn't updated as often, also there are a few ways you will need to set it into the mode b, which is what is required for flashing, one of these methods is kind of dangerous and if not done properly could kill the drive. Where the Samsung is quite picky on the chipset used, but is the more supported via updates of the two. You also will need to be able to boot off of a usb thumbdrive, or atleast make a NTFS boot disk with the proper tools in order to flash, it's not too complicated. And like he said, currently no tools or files available for that particular BenQ drive, but give it a month or two and I'm sure they'll figure something out.
