When I connect my 360 to my modem (Motorola SB5100 SURFboard) and attempt to get online to sign up for XBOX LIVE I am encountering a problem.

The first test is completed and it recognizes my wired connection. The second test in which it checks the I.P. address fails. In the more info tab it says I should turn on DHCP or make sure no other device is using the same I.P. address. I disconnected my computer from the modem only in order to sign up, as I do not want to go out and by a router or anything just yet.

Is it possible to get around this, or will I have to get a router before I can access XBOX LIVE at all?

Thanks in advance,
STK

Edit: All fixed, but for future reference I reconnected the modem to my computer and it gave me a new I.P. address which I then manually entered into the XBOX and voila!
Specs:
Optimum Online Broadband
Motorola SB5100 SURFboard modem
Ethernet
Windows XP

If you could do some small things on your pc for us while you are connected to the modem we will be able to sort it out im sure.. Smile

To start leave your pc setup as normal and connected to the internet and do the following..

1. Choose Start Menu
2. Choose Run
3. Type in the following and hit OK:

cmd

4. At the command prompt type:

ipconfig /all

Once you have all the ip address info for your pc and DNS write them down and paste them here so we can help you assign a ip address for your xbox 360.

It sounds like your modem doesnt have DHCP turned on.. You could also do that if you know how to log into your modem via http..

let us know how you go,

hobbs

I am a Comcast tech as well as a very proud admin here. It sounds like your'e a cable internet customer. What you are doing wrong is.......
you're not rebooting the modem when you connect it to the 360. What happens is the modem get's an IP address from the DHCP server and locks onto it until it looses power. If you disconnect it from one system and reconnect it to another system without pulling the power cord out of the back then waiting 5 seconds before reconnecting it then the modem will never reassign a new IP, it'll just think the PC just rebooted and continue to issue the same ip address thinking that it's still connectd to a pc.

All you have to do is pull out the power cord when you unplug it from your PC, then plug it into the 360, THEN you plug the power back in.

Problem solved, i bet that's what the problem is.
