Dutch Site http://www.xlife.nl/article.php?id=17658 is reporting that Xvid and Divx playback will be possible on the 360 within 2 months.

I don't read dutch so i'm going on the Maxconsole news item for this http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=10834

DivX/Xvid Coming to Xbox 360?

An editor of a dutch Xbox fan site called 'Xlife' let us know that at a recent MS press party in Rotterdam called 'Mission 360', MS revealed that Xvid and DivX playback would be heading to their system within 2 months. It was also emphasized that they plan on rolling out alot of new colours for the Xbox 360 console
.

It dosn't say if this is streaming video or just playback from attached storage.

I done a news item on this a little while ago. And you are thinking the same as me eltsha, i'm willing to bet that so long as you have Media Centre installed you can stream XviD and Divx videos. Confused

But i really do hope that they will allow you to bung some vids on a dvd and allow them to playback, i just doubt it as there is no money to be made from that. Crying or Very sad

the news i saw the other day sounded a lot more reliable and realistic... that VC-1/H.264 codecs would be enabled in the 360 dash in the next couple months. check the post here. now the question is.... is vc-1/h.264 the complicated name for a divx codec? its all mpeg4, after that its kinda gibberish to me.

it is possible to stream divx to the 360 already, but it is because of a MCE app that converts the divx to wmv on the fly. check tut here, i assume this works but i havnt tried it (just easier to use xbmc instead of installing MCE)

Sorry for reposting a news story Embarassed , i did have a quick look to see if it was reported on but couldn't see it.

There seems to be a lot of noise on the internet about xbox 360 being able to stream video when Vista and Media Player 11 come out, and people saying Microsoft will allow it with Win XP and Media Player 11. IF they allow you to stream Xvid/Divx then you should in theory be able to burn a disc to watch.

But it's like you said wheres the money it, Microsoft may be to short sighted to see that enablerling these features will sell more 360's

Not a problem at all eltsha, its always good to have people willing to post news on the site, as its far to easy for us (half blind admins) to miss good stuff. Smile

Well i'm hoping that you will be allowed to stream Divx and XviD from the standard XP install and WMP 11. But i guess streaming video is different than the console itself supporting the formats. But like Microsoft said, there should be a firmware upgrade soon; so hopefully it will allow direct playback. Smile

Quote from dutch site:

Na afloop had ik even een kort gesprek met de presentator en ik vroeg hem of er ooit ondersteuning gaat komen voor DivX en XviD. Tot mijn grote verbazing begon hij me te vertellen dat Microsoft hier heel hard mee aan het werk is en er binnen twee maanden een firmware update gaat komen waardoor het mogelijk is om Divx en XviD rechtstreeks op je Xbox 360 af te spelen.

translation:

after the event ended, i had a short conversation with the person presenting the xbox360 at the event. i asked him if there ever was gonna be divx/xvid support. at my big surprise he told me that microsoft was working hard on this project and that within to months from now a firmware update would come supporting divx and xvid, and giving the possibility to play it straight from your Xbox 360.

untill then lets just hope its true ^^

Ive been seriously considering purchasing or making my own Media Center PC anyway.. Lots of guys have already released programs which will allow you to stream divx etc already I read somewhere.. Smile (probably 360-hq hahah)

I know we have a few members who already have their own MCE machines and are quite happy..

just my 2 cents..

I've read somewhere that you can download the media files that are used in Media Centre PC's onto a standard WinXP install and it will allow you to stream videos. Not an option I would choose tho.

It's almost end of December and yet no Divx/Xvid update oh well I'm assuming it was for WMV update anyways back then. Curse you M$ it means that I have to either build myself a MCE puter or get a PS3 with linux which is even more redundent!

Yes we all know that XBMC has really spoiled us but I really want the h.264 running full speed on it but since it's processor related there's nothing we can do about it.

BTW if any of you people who actually got the dreamXbox with upgraded RAM and processor does XBMC run full speed on HD videos?? Because I converted most of my animes into MP4 format with h.264 encoding and it skips alot so I rather buy a Dreamxbox if it ran at full speed then going to buy a PS3.

Why not look into TVersity server for your pc.. You can stream WMV/DIVX or XVID etc and it will transcode the file to wmv ready to be viewed on your 360..

Check out this tutorial here for more info:

Stream DivX/XviD on the Xbox 360 using WinXP:

hope that helps.

cheers,
