Hey guys, i know theres a lot of musicial people on here, so i was wondering if i can run a set up idea by you guys, and maybe get some input.

I want to set up a home studio to record (at first) Vocals and Acoustic guitar. I will be making beats for my brother using various software and want to be able to record his vocals as well.

So the core of my studio is planned to be a pc and adobe audition, pc spec dual core 2.6hz min, 2gb ram, 320gb hard drive (bigger if poss).

Now my main problem is this -

i want a mixer so i can have the knobs there to adjust the eq, have phantom power if i need it, and have a way to connect to my pc via usb, effects wise for now i can put everything through the pc and add effects and process and mix it down there.

So ive narrowed it down to two choices-

i could get the alesis multimix 8

or i could possibly get the boss br600 - but this is more expensive but it has cosm effects, its a 8 track recorder with 64 virtual tracks, and loads of gizmos and stuff but runs on compact flash memory cards.

At the moment im swinging more for alesis because itll cut loads of rubbish out i might not need, and anything i do need i can either do on the pc or add on later. Plus i want to maintain quality and effiency.

Im planning one sm58, with boom shield and 2 pairs of sehnmeiser (i think thats the spelling) headphones as well, as im kind of hoping that the sm58 would be brill for vocals and hopefully good enough for an acoustic guitar.

This is so me and my brother, and my musician buddys can get cracking and record some good quality demos and stuff.

So yeah...bit of a long un, hopefully give u a good read at least.

Frozenfire is the man to speak to.. He has only just setup his own recording studio but i think he is using a MAC.. Eitherway he is probably still running windows lol.

Ill send him a msg and see if he has some input. I think it's why he ended up going for a MAC actually.

anyway, glad to hear your getting into it. Have some fun and feel free to upload some pics mate.

cheers,

hobbs

Yeah I was using windows to record before, I had my setup using samplitude (decent program but ran into a few problems) I've tried audition but didn't like it near as much. Now I have my mac and logic and its fantastic.

If you have the money too I would highly recommend a mac with either logic or pro tools (pro tools works on windows btw)

and if your just doing acoustic and voice recordings you don't really even need a mixer unless you plan on taking it to shows aswell, because all of the recording software setups have built in EQ's and effects

(on a side note, if you buy a mac and logic you can use logic has a subprogram called mainstage that lets you use it live for shows (eq and effects))

I have an m-audio fast track pro and its very versatile for vocals and miking acoustic guitars

as for the mixer you have, the one problem you will run into is that the usb out is only the master out. so if your recording multiple tracks at once it will only appear as one track on the recording software (an issue my one buddy had)

hope this helps

Frozenfire

cheers frozen fire very very helpful, will look into it all. pro tools on pc probably sounds the route im going to go, but ill have a look at macs, as ive heard various things good about them and sound and video editing.

yeah, ill probably forget the mixer for now, something like that m-audio was what i was after but it looked to me like a mixer with usb connection didnt seem all that more expensive for a lot more features. And yeah i kinda asummed the master output thingy, which would kinda make having a multi channel mixer pointless.

either way, i have a lot of work left to do. After getting ill after my first gig and nearly popping the clock just gives me more determination to get my music done.

Ive nearly finished completely reworking 1 song which has taken me about 3 months. But bare in mind im aiming for really good vocals, and its taken me that time to learn to sing better really! so yeah...lots and lots of work todo.

lots and lots and lots and lots to do.....darn it

@bom

You sound like you've been busy mate..
I played with recording bands at home but that was like 10 years ago, the technology just changes so much.. Otherwise i would have left more info for you.

I use to always work on PC apps like cakewalk and i think something called soundforge maybe.. There were quite a few good old apps but most still required mixing boards etc.. It was costly.

frozenfire has set up a really nice system with his MAC.. He is really persuading me to get one too.

@ frozenfire1,

thanks for the reply mate, wasn't sure if you were too busy recording etc..
chat whenever you got time buddy!

@ whoever is reading

also, another guy who is into recording is "TheRealHypnotix" a moderator here on the HQ's.. Maybe try sending him a msg!
