Hello all,

I used to mod Xbox's, but fell out of it when the 360 came into play. I currently have a nice falcon that I wish to keep unmodded. However, I have some free time this winter and hey....why not. I posted a few times in the class pages from an old seller I used to buy from a great deal in the old xbox days. The age of the posts seems like he doesn't visit the site or doesn't have them. So I am really feeling the burn to mod one of these bad boys. I have seen many add on's that are soliderless and would allow me to upload this firmware. I don't really know which one to get and if I am going to get a new 360...I want the right one. Also I was looking at getting LLama new heatsink and the Wisper dual V2 fans...along with a RROD kit (just in case). I don't want the new unit to fry the first time I mod the thing.

Also I have searched here a great bit and everything seems locked up for VIP, which I understand it is needed for the site. I just want to make sure if I pay the VIP fee...that I would have the links or software needed for the modding (used to be in the old days with Xbox). Any and all help in starting to mod a new 360 (or if someone is willing to sell one) and which pieces I should get to keep it running would be great. I just want one really to backup my current games from travel and the unit will not go on live. I also don't play for really long hours...maybe one to two of game play. Please help an old newbie.

The item I am talking about above is:
http://www.modchip.ca/store/product.php?productid=16649&cat=284&page=1

Could I install that and then DL the correct firmware that works with my DVD drive (use LLAMA guide) and bam have a modded Xbox? Then add the other items Wisper cooling fan V2 and the heat sink from Llama to help with the RROD? Then use the new VIP access to backup my current games to play off of my HDD?

You might want to think about waiting to mod the xbox until the iXtreme lite firmware is released. Unless you don't plan to go online with this xbox at all, all of the current firmwares are not safe to go on xbox live with.

This will be a complete side project and the new modded unit will not touch live. have a xbox already setup for that now. However, does the plan above look like its going to work? anything i am missing?

You do not need any of that kit if your drive is not a lite-on. If you have any other dvd drive all you need is a PCI VIA6421 SATA card for around £5. You use that to connect the xbox dvd drive to the pc, and power the dvd drive with the 360.

Depending on what firmware you get depends on the dvd drive you have. You can check the dvd drive by how the tray looks when open. Not sure where the link on 360-hq is for that but it is somewhere (can't look at the mo, at work).

If you have an older drive you will probably want to install an older firmware, 1.4 probably as that does not check the waves (part of the file structure) on the disk, i do believe. If you install a newer firmware you will need to update it again to the new lite firmware once it comes out (no eta). There will be no performance benefit from a newer firmware (1.6 is the current one).
