A 30-year-old man named Henry Gribbohm managed to lose his life savings of $2,600 by trying to win an Xbox 360 Kinect on a carnival game called Tubs of Fun.
People do stupid things. Really stupid things. So stupid, in fact, that it’s hard to believe that some of the things you hear is true. Case in point, a man lost his entire life savings – all $2,600 of it – by trying to win an Xbox 360 Kinect on a carnival game, reports CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV.
30-year-old Henry Gribbohm from Epsom, New Hampshire was playing “Tubs of Fun,” which is a game where you toss balls in a bucket. “You’re expecting the kids to win a few things, let the kids have a good time,” but “It just didn’t turn out that way,” said Gribbohm, who was at a traveling carnival run by New Hampshire-based Fiesta Shows.
After just a couple of minutes, Gribbohm managed to lose $300 after trying to win back his money by going double or nothing. But if that wasn’t bad (and stupid) enough, Gribbohm actually went back home to get $2,600 and lost that as well. “You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back,’” said Gribbohm.
But instead, all he got in return was a stuffed banana with dreadlocks (that makes me giggle), and what gets me is that the guy actually had time to return home and think about what he was doing. I wonder if at any point during the trip back home he stopped and said to himself, “You know what, risking my life savings is probably not a good idea.”
When Gribbohm went back to complain the next day, he got back $600 from the game’s operator, but that didn’t stop Gribbohm from filing a report to the Manchester Police Department, which is investigating if there was any fraud.
Gribbohm is also thinking of filing a lawsuit. “It’s not possible that it [the game] wasn’t rigged,” he said. Of course, a lot of carnival games are designed so that it’s difficult to win, and in the case of Tubs of Fun, the catch is that the balls are able to bounce out of the bucket.
“For once in my life I happened to become that sucker,” said Gribbohm. “It was foolish for putting up my life savings.”
That goes without saying, but what makes this sadder is that he was trying to win a Kinect, which isn’t even worth spending $50 on. If the prize was at least a game console, then things wouldn’t be as sad as it is.
