Well after being in Darwin for 12mths and being a fisho all my life I started to get the urge to go hunting with my dog Jett a 14mth (old Arab x Mastif x ?) and Sage a 12mth(Dane x Ridgeback) bitch. After browsing the forum here and asking around at work about how, where n when to get pigs I got them a breast plate each and started heading out every few days in the early morning or late evening hoping to see some pigs out in the scrub. The mut's just love getting out in the scrub for a walk so i had really just been out walking them without much hope of seeing anything let alone catching a boar with dogs that had never seen or done pigging before.
After 8-10 unsuccessful trips only seeing old sign I stumbled upon an area last Thursday that was covered in rooting and wallows. It looked a lot fresher than what i had seen in other area's but was still old n dried up. After walking around the edges of swampy scrub the following day's fresher diggings and rub marks were evident along with a fresh muddy wallow. I was confident i was in the right area but the mut's still only seemed to be running around sniffing the air now n again and going in to the edge of the scrub for short periods before returning.
This morning finally brought the result i was searching for. After walking a good 5km on a different approach to the swampy area and finding more fresh sign Jett took off with Sage in hot pursuit at 100mph. I looked up to see a mob of around 10-15 black pigs breaking through the edge of the swamp n scrub with Jett chasing one pig and sage on to another. I followed Jett around 50m before he bailed up the boar against some fallen logs and I tried suing him on to the pig. After a few barks he charged in and grabbed the pigs ear and began lugging it as best he knew how. I looked around and saw sage with a bigger pig bailed up and giving her a flick around but she was just barking at it. I tried to call her over and she came to where Jett was trying to rip the pigs ear off. I tried to get her to jump in but she just barked at them. It was time to stick my first porker and with Jett holding fast i went in and just like a had seen on videos grabbed the boars back right leg and drove the blade in where i had been told too. With a grunt and a bit of a squeal the blade found its mark and the boar fell over with Jett still on it's ear. What a rush for me n the mutt's!! I tried to get Jett off but he wouldn't let go so i turned around to find sage with a sucker in her gob. I got it off her and she was off like a shot in the direction of where the rest of the pigs went. Having no idea what to do i started to follow her and heard her barking about 300m out into the thick swamp edge. There was no way to get through to her so i called her back and after 5mins she returned to where i had finally got Jett off the boar and was dragging it out of the swamp. After piling on the praise for the dog's i set up the pig for a few pictures and then headed back to the car a happy hunter finally. _________________________________________________________ http://www.360-hq.com - ENFORCER
