After repairing my broken 360 and fixing a few issues on the DVD drive, I think I'm comfortable enough to attempt fixing my bud's drive. I'm thinking about ordering this lens, but not sure really how to tell which drive he has. I'm seeing where some are saying the BenQ lens' are the worst, being that they die faster. Any suggestions?
Scarface, you got anything in stock for this? _________________________________________________________

there is many ways to tell what drive it is with out opening it. by just ejecting the drive tells you what you will need. i have found a good picture for you. if its either benq or lite on you can see in the img were to look taking the faceplate off to see what wires color there is yellow is lite-on white benq red/black samsung the hole block is hitachi. if liteon or benq they use the same laser mostly older models i seen newer 9 series ones use a different one but i have tried older lite-on and benq lasers and they worked fine so either way.
All depends on the way a person takes care of there drives i personally hate hitachis and samsungs sometimes benqs i been liking the lite-on drives but your better off and cheaper swaping the laser but first cleaning the old one and checking the ohms on it to see if it needs a pot tweek.

Sweet pic Scarface. Thanks a lot man. Soon as I get a chance to check his 360 out I'll see which one it is. I'm gonna do some research and see whats up with the pot tweak, but I'm almost sure its about to die. It wont read anything. He's watched more dvds in that thing than played Xbox games. Its one of the later versions of the Elites also. He got it last Christmas, not the one just passed. Dont think it should have gone out that fast. _________________________________________________________

dvds can put a tweak on the laser for sure its a game console not a dvd player wish people realized this a lot more they give the option because of the people crying about not being able to do that then when there xbox drives go out they complain more its no win win for either ha. i have watched movies on mine from the dvd player maybe about 4 movies total lol but see with movies and games they both use a different pot calibration on the lense and if they have watched a lot out of it i can see the pots getting off track from the vibration of the dvd being in there. i always do this before trying to get a new laser saves money and time as i fix almost all them every time. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Well put Scar. I will do the tweak research then. I'll check the tuts here fist and see what I come up with. Now it's just a matter of getting together with my Buddy and trying it out. _________________________________________________________

I finally got my buddy's 360 and I have to honestly say it is the dirtiest console I've ever seen. The vents are covered with dust bunnies. I'm going to clean it up and try the pot tweak. I've been looking for a replacement lens also. I was wondering if this one is compatible with all Lite-on drives? _________________________________________________________

Philips VAD6037 Xbox 360 drive.
is what it says it is for but they usually work with the lite-ons too if you go to ebay probably get one for cheaper with shipping and get it faster then there. Search Lite-on Dvd Lense or Hop 141 or 14x are the lens i believe but first just clean the lense on that one with some lense cleaner then test it before buying a new laser and also do the pot tweak with a ohms reader before buying a new one too. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

I have a dvd drive in my PC that will no longer read my DVD data discs but reads data CD's just fine, Im going to try the POT TWEAK that Scar mentioned.
UPDATE...
Having second thoughts, reading up on how easy it is to kill your drive, so will have to think about doing this one, Not as much an electronic tech as Scar is.

You would have to tweak it really low or really high to mess up the laser the process of doing this is go little by little and keep checking on the ohm meter to see where it is at. and testing it to see if its working aka reading games.
In your thing gameover ur best just buying a new drive lol they are cheap. _________________________________________________________ The one the only Scarface!!

Ya I know, Ill need to buy a new one for my new PC anyway, but I like to squeeze every bit of use out of crap.
Do you have a link to a prefered tutorial on the Tweak, or will any do?
