c/p as usual
These days it became clear that Microsoft preparing launch of a new major update for its console. What made an impression at all was the announcement of the following:
We are conducting an open call for US based participants * for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format.
That means exactly what you think:) Since there are not many details yet, will post only what c4eva said on the issue, which is enough at this stage:
[2011-03-29 11:00 PM UTC] # fw so what do u think about new disc format [http://c4evaspeaks.com/new-xgd3-disc...dash-preview]?
[2011-03-29 11:11 PM UTC] # fw MS will introduce xgd3 - this will add more ap checks, cvi (content integerity) checks, increase the disc size and adds a new layer for protection issues - all in the 20,500 sdk ! bring it on!
[2011-03-29 11:15 PM UTC] # fw C4 will this effect the launch of Slim lt? will it be delayed for some reason?
[2011-03-29 11:16 PM UTC] # fw jeeboy: No
[2011-03-29 11:21 PM UTC] # fw will know more once we get one of these new discs
Apparently Microsoft embark on a completely different direction, namely, passive-aggressive set against pirates ...

impressive as always m$.. I've been so busy with work this week i have missed all the big news, so cheers for the headsup.. this should prove interesting for backups/modding now. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:

Maybe they will actually get it right this time round but Im not holding my breath. M$ has the worst track record when it comes to security on their products. Everytime they say this is unhackable blah blah next day you see a vid of it being done. I still remember being online with my hacked windows vista watching a news conference video about how it couldnt be hacked.
Until they truly put the needs of the consumer first (ability to backup, use old 360 HDDs without having to bust the case open or a transfer kit on the S, not using SHITTY products like Hitatchi Deathstar drives tagged at over 3 times the MSRP, or having true support for old xbox titles instead of trying to make us buy the best games like Godfather and GTA 3 a second time, the ability to ransfer DLC like Res Evil Gold if my 360 or HDD buys the bigone) they will be a target and they will be hacked. People give to much credit to the security on the 360 if M$ was really that good at making an air tight system why all the security updates with their OS?
Give it time if I was a betting man Id say the 360 will turn out to be even better for modding than the OG
you know, it seems c4eva already has this under control, and was prepared for something like this in the new lt firmware. Besides, do we really think M$ want's to tighten control of their systems know the key is out for ps3. Oh ya, rumor has it, the new update to patch the key it won't work...

A highly placed development source has confirmed to Digital Foundry that the new disc format being beta tested in a new dashboard upgrade adds 1GB to the storage of Xbox 360 game discs.
The maximum space allocated to game data on the current disc format is just 6.8GB out of a maximum of 7.95GB on a standard dual layer DVD, with over 1GB dedicated to a DVD-Video partition that also contained anti-piracy security sectors. It seems that this video partition has either been drastically reduced or omitted completely in the new format Microsoft is looking to roll-out.
Beta testers of the new dashboard get a free copy of Halo: Reach once they are accepted into the new preview programme. We can assume that this isn't just a generous gift on Microsoft's part - more likely it is a disc pressed using the new format, and Microsoft is looking for data on performance on as many different systems as it can.
More space will be nice but M$ seems to always have a way to turn it into a cash grab. I dont mean to sound pessimistic but it wouldnt surprise me in the least if they tried to make us buy some addon to use the new format. Id love to see a legacy free format, make it more like the PC it already is and let us upgrade the drive with blu-ray, throw in dedicated GPU and actualy give some choice to these addons.
Dont get me wrong I love my 360s and OG XBOX but so much about the high handed approach of M$ pi$$es me off. If this is to improve gameplay and graphics then great but if its just to throw another GB of useless security measures on there that will just slow down boot times then its just another reason why the PC is still the best gaming console.
The whole thing realy surprises me, I would have figured the next step would have been to take advantage of that 16GB thumbdrive option. We all know games would run much smoother off a flash based device and would stand up to time a little better than disc based media.

Reminds me of GDisk aka GCD which was the Dreamcast disks which were modified CDRoms that had 1 GB of space. Still all the games were easly cracked and if needed splited in 2 Cds.
No problem here because it is the same regular DVD-DL, I am thinking it will be the wave 12 with some new checks... Will be cracked in hours I can bet.
To change the media they would need to replace all the X360 DVD drives _________________________________________________________

Which is exactly why I knew that they wouldn't be changing the actual media type. There would be no way that they could recall the console or make everyone buy a new one. That would be a terrible business move on their part because it would piss a lot of people off. _________________________________________________________
