This is one of my favorite videos of late. This is cockpit video of an approach to LAX from the north. I am a private pilot but have not been up in about a year due to financial reasons, but am making it a goal to get back up on a regular basis by the summer.
I live not far to the north of Los Angeles, just on the other side of the hills, next valley over. Flying into Los Angeles airspace is about as tense as it gets. There are so many different classes of airspace all crammed together and each with its own rules. Not to mention the heavy air traffic. I try to make a trip to LAX once in a while just to keep sharp.
I also prefer night flying, its a blast. Also its less active at night, traffic is easier to spot, and from my area I can fly all the way to San Francisco by sight alone, each city along the way is lit up like christmas. But I have not done LAX at night yet, Last decent size Airport I flew into at night was Fresno.
This video really motivates me to get back in the cockpit. is much better in the higher resolution and full screen.

very cool gx0,
I love flying too, personally im a helicopter lover and want to be a chopper pilot if i ever get my finger out. The funny thing is i already work for an airline company and i haven't even been up in a plane/jet or heli yet.. lol. i suppose i could easily ask, my boss is always flying around the place.
I've been flying in private planes several times when i was 18 or so with my best mates dad who owned a bunch of cessna's etc. It was alot of fun and hard work at the same time.. hehe
oh and at work we have the aviation gps database running and it is wicked in the United States, i can't believe there are that many planes in the air at once. i wish i could get a screenshot you would fall over man.
That's a great overview of LA. Was that Santa Monica Piere?? I dont know alot about the United States..
Yep that was the famous Santa Monica Pier, you can just make out the Ferris wheel there.
I usually fly from my area straight west to the coast line then take that south to the Los Angeles. I do not often land at LAX as it is a serious stress, But I do always make a point to land at Catalina Island which is only 26 miles off the coast and still in Los Angeles County.
As far as helicopters, I also want to give that a go, have not been up in one yet but one of my Pilot buddies went up recently and says its quite a job, said its like riding a unicycle and juggling at the same time. I love the Idea of being able to hover and land anywhere.
Ya dude, go for a lesson, most places offer a free first lesson, or at least did back in the day, or at the very least offer a very low rate for your first flight. Your first solo is pretty cool, I remember mine, I had to keep looking around the cabin to convince my self I was really the only one in the plane lol.
As for the real time airspace GPS, ya man, its crazy how much mass is up in the air at any one time.
Most pilots are very cool with anyone interested in aviation. Just let people know you are interested and I bet you can get a bunch of rides.
http://flightaware.com has alot of real time flight tracking. You can even click on any aircraft and all its info comes up. Including its route.
