Yep you can read the key easy on these drives the writing to them is the hard part. if it is a mxic you can cut a trace and probe a point to unlock it but if its the winbond chip then you have to do what is called a kamikaze with drilling onto the chip with a resistor 100ohm hooked up and that and if you mess it up the board is messed. Easy way is to get like stated the Team Xecuter Replacement board but they do not come cheap $75-85. And you want to have a onboard sata port pci cards do not work no more for drives that are locked and best to do with a ck3 and usbpro kit which alone will cost about $80.00
I do offer my services on the slims to flash them. I use a replacement tx board. The cost is Shipping here and back plus $80 for the replacement tx board installed and flashed with the latest lt2.0 for that drive.
http://www.360-hq.com/postt7221.html here is my flashing topic some people dont want to invest in buying all the stuff they need to only flash the drive once but also note with the replacement tx board its well worth it as you can hard lock them and unlock them with ease for future updating well worth it imo.
But if you really want to try flashing it yourself it is a major get your key first before anything. Follow the Jungleflasher Tutorial that comes with each jungleflasher version you download make sure you have the latest which is 1.89 from jungleflasher.net and they have a pdf tutorial that you can follow i would read it and find your drive and make sure if you are going to do it yourself you have all the info on doing it and supplys other wise in some cases people have just very expensive dvd players at the end but with the reset glitch hack out now you really dont have to worry about it that much but that part requires a lot more work then flashing the drive does ha.

Yes guys done all that what was mentioned got the pcb board took out the old one put the new one and flashed it with ltplus 2.0 cfw using ck3 pro all the good gear but put it back together and run into drammers the disk from my xbox360 phat ran in the old 360 good but the new slim would reconize the disk or come up as a dvd so i run into a road block. And decided to put back the old pcb board the way it was for now until i figger out what the go is. _________________________________________________________ play hard or go home...

It could just a bad media that your phat 360 drive can read but the slim cant.
Try another backup, use Verbatim disk t 2,5x speed _________________________________________________________
