Hello new here, never had a problem with the xbox until now.
I bought a xbox 360 from someone for $40, and it had rrod. I thought I could just at least try to fix it, and have myself a 360 for less that $80 all inclusive.
I fixed the rrod, and it works every time i start it up, but now i discovered the drive is bad.
When i put in an authentic Forza 2 in there, it says: to play this disc, please put in in a xbox 360 console. It plays movies just fine however.
What could be wrong with it??
My drive is a Hitachi 79FL if that makes a difference.

Did you reapply thermal compound when you did the x-clamp fix? _________________________________________________________

Yes I did, I followed the guide provided here in this site.
But now it works, for some reason... I loosened and re tightened the screws, then it worked magically.
But theres another problem. The drive doesnt work. I bought this unit for $40 after the own said it has a rrod, and I thought i can at least try to fix it and have an xbox 360 for less than $80 with accessories and such.

To me it sounds like the original drive crapped out and someone just threw a new one into. When you switch dvd drives your suppose to get the key of the original drive and put it onto the new drive so that when you go to play games it will work, since DVD's will play fine without the key, but you have to have the key to play games.
Do you by chance have the original drive? If not, you should email the guy or something and ask him if he has done anything to it.
It could also just be that you have a bad laser in the unit, but I would be pointing more towards the other one at the moment. _________________________________________________________

One of the smarter members here that works on 360's as a side gig told me that playing DVD;s on the xbox can screw up the drive or laser. That the xbox can read dvd movies just fine but it is a different media than games and going back and forth can screw up the laser somehow giving errors such as the "open trey" message when you put in a game. Not sure this has anything to do with your situation but thought I would throw it in. If it is true that dvd movies can screw with the xbox game drive over time then more people should be made aware.

I doubt he has the original key, as he had several units and was just selling them to others to experiment with.
Would it be possible to purchase a new flashed xbox dvd drive, and just drop it right in?

Yeh, it sounds like your UNIQUE KEY is missing.. If a Xbox 360 DVDROM drive has been changed out it must have the KEY from the original drive which matches. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:
