Hey guys Im just trying to get some info on heatgunning your xbox 360, I have read the tutorial by wilhelm and understand its dangerous and have read tutorials based on wilhelms talking about putting putty on various thing around the CPU and GPU.
As far as I Understand flexing and overheating is one of the main problems with the 360, so why is heating the CPU and GPU to 500c a good idea?
I want to make it clear Im not saying that Wilhelms tutorial doesnt work or anything or its a bad idea I just want to know the technical side of it lol.

What errors are you having? Hopefully its an error or problem one of our staff our members have fixed previously and we could give some pointers. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:

I first had Error E74 with it and it ran out of warranty last year so I bought a new one which is being sent off soon to microsoft as that one has got the 3 red lights Error 1022.
Ever since both of my 360's have been broke which is about a week or so now, i'v been searching the internet for ways to fix the one thats out of warranty on my own.
I've tried overheating the 360 with the so called towel trick which probably does more damage than anything else, but i was back online for about 4 days then RROD 1022 the same as my other 360.
I then checked out Wilhelms other fix which requires M5 screws, steel washers, arctic silver 5, thermal cleaner and prepping the metal case for less flexing ect.
I'm still waiting on the arctic silver 5 and thermal cleaner to arrive through post, Im intending to try this fix which works for a long time and when it goes wrong again you just mess around with the screws a bit.
Im only considering the Heatgun method if this method fails completely.
(Heatguns aint cheap). I just want to understand more about how heatgunning your 360 will fix it.

I actually think that the heatgunning method is just a more advanced and more expensive way of the towel trick because to me they both seem to be working under the same principle which is overheating your CPU and GPU.
Can anyone tell me any different because I would like to know if im wrong.

wrapping the 360 in a towel has a simlar effect yes because it does heat the CPU/GPU up but it can also warp the mainboard and cause all sorts of issues. I know of 3 people who have done the towel trick and when i looked to repair their 360's they were just paper weights..
On the other hand with a heat gun and the correct preparation you can heat only the GPU/CPU as to reball the solder correctly and not warp or heat any other parts of the unit.
A safer method for a homebrew attempt would be to remove the fan power from the 360 motherboard so the 360 overheats and it will shut down after a few minutes depending on the temp and version.. This has worked sometimes as a quick fix and is also used in the XCLAMP fix. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:

Thnx Forahobby I actually didnt realise you had to overheat your 360 after the Xclamp fix and thnx for clearing that heatgunning question up for me (This website is awesome because of guys like you who help out).
One worry I have though is I used the towel trick once on the 360 im doing the Xclamp fix on, hopefully it wouldnt of done too much damage.

I wouldn't use the towel trick to overheat it when you replace the x-clamps. I would follow llamma's guide and only have the fan ontop of the CPU heatsink for roughly 20 minutes so that the GPU can overheat and the solder will reflow
