Well we assume he is dead. If you've read the books, the reason he survived the Halo 1 Flood attack aswell as the Explosion at the end... well comes down to the fact that he is black. Not being racist or anything like that. He has some sort of genetic mutation found only in humans of african decesent. When the flood try to absorb him, they... "Don't like the taste" yet they still bring him to life. I'm not sure exactly how it works but it seemingly does.
