my plan, after years of ps2, is:

get xbox pro (pre-mod)
get external usb drive (any thanks to macdrive tutorial on here)

from what i've been reading (it's been hours & my head is spinning) i think the following is possibly correct:

from the external drive i can play mp3s, view photos and various movie files.
- what video formats? what is native & what needs codec downloads from live?

i can backup games and play them from external drive rather than stick in dvd
- true? just in iso format?

and if using purely external drive, do i need pro or would arcade do the same?

apologies if this is in the wrong place or just stupid stuff.

firstly welcome to the site, if you have a large hard drive, make sure its formatted to fat32, small flash drives do work as well, the 360 can play divx but sometimes depending what you encode your audio or video it cant play them. i dont know whats best, im trying to figure out the best and when i do will let you know. it doesnt play any other video files as far as im aware, mp3's work fine, but if u want to rip to the hard drive you need to have the cd to copy onto the hard drive. in order to play the divx file you need your xbox connected to live and play the divx file (file extension .avi) and it tell you you need an optional media update, go through the procedures and download the add on for free, and it will play divx!

Hi Apes,

You can purchase just about any USB hdd and load it full of DIV, XVID, WMV, mp4 and other formats and play them anywhere at anytime.

If you want to run HD files that are over the 4gb filesize limit then you will need MACDRIVE.. If you are just running smaller files like xvid, divx and mp3 then you dont need to use MACDRIVE.

Welcome mate to 360-HQ and 360 in general.

As for previously having a PS2 I myself was in the same boat and now I have 1 360 and 3 xbox originals and no PS's at all. Go figure.

The 360 is a great media centre and will play alot of your video and audio as long as its not real old or corrupted. I use it constantly for all types of media & have to say it's the best console I have ever owned.

Ask as many questions as you want these guys and girls on here are great and will help you as much as they can.

Hopefully might even catchya online one day for a game or two.

TM.
