I'm a modding noob when it comes to 360, but I have done a lot of reading.
I know the limit is 120g, but I was wondering if different types of HD's will work. I've done some reading and it seems the only HD's people use are the 2.5 inch 5400 rpm, or so it seems.
I was wondering if 3.5 inch drives would work if you had the right connections(Sata/Power).( If this is the case, I know they wouldn't fit in the side saddle case, but I'd be willing to mod that, I'm not too much on the case looking original..)
I was also wondering if 7200 rpm drives would work, AND if so, would they improve load times?(IE would the 360 use the drive to it's full potential and not just run it at 5400)
The other question I have; is a bit off topic, but eh...
How far can you take the HDD mods and still have full XBOX LIVE ability?
I won't give up my H3 untill I get another box to mod, if this choice should come.
Anyways, any input would be helpful, and thanks for your time.
As far as I know it is only a certain series of Western Digital drives that you can exchange in there, and they are all 2.5 inch drives to my knowledge. Also you will need the SS.bin off an original xbox 360 120 gb hard drive. I'm not sure if the keys are unique and if M$ will ban you if you are using someone else's key online while they are. So do so at your own risk.
I will look into what drives you can use later for you when I have more time. Unless another member knows and posts before I get a chance.
I was looking for my old original xbox controllers for parts(you can use the sticks if you sand them a bit, and the D-pad, as far as I've read) and I stumbled acrost my WD 120g ide HD, and it got me thinking, that's where I came up with the idea.

The faster RPM the hdd has the more heat the unit should put off in theory and probably the reason why they only use recommended drives for the xbox 360 drivebay.
I haven't looked into manually upgrading my hdd so unfortunately i can't give you anymore definate answers apart from i know that the Western Digital BEV Series are compatible using HDDHackr.
If you are using your xbox for offline use I'm positive you could much easier upgrade your 360 hdd using the HDDHackr tutorial:
Heat won't be a concern for me, because I'm planning to externalize the DVD and Hard drives. Not sure how or where yet, but I'll get there eventually. Brainstorming stage.
The second question is more of a novelty, the 3.5 inch drive, and if they've got drives that have the same connections. Or if there's just something else inherently different that would make them incompatible.
As far as I know the BEV series of drive is the only one that will work on the 360. HDDhackr is built to be used with these drives only and its the simplest way to upgrade the hdd.
As far as RPM goes I think the stock drive runs at 5400 RPM. I'm not sure if increasing the RPM would help at all because I'm not sure if the hddss.bin file includes how fast the drive can spin. _________________________________________________________
