i have just bought an xbox 360 off ebay, it powers up fine but the disc drive doesnt open, you can hear it trying to open (it opens by about 2mm then it gives up 5 seconds later and goes back in), it played the game fifa 06 first time i turned it one but now it doesnt seem to read it. i took the xbox apart and turned the cogs on the samsung dvd drive to make it open and left it open , put it back together and turned it on. when i turned it on i pressed the close button and it closed but opens up angain and stays open. i then tried a dvd in it and it played it but sometimes i would jump for a second. could someone help me out here please.

sounds to me like it may be easier to purchase a replacement.
I believe you can backup your existing firmware and then dump it onto your new 360 drive when you get one.
I havent tried it myself but after reading many tutorials im sure its possible.

Oh man, I have the same issue. Let me explain.
A dude has a 360 and it fubars, flashing lights and DVD reader shot.
Dude gives it to me and I'm thinkin', "damn... fix it and it's a free 360 for the little dude!!".
Opened it up, just full of leftovers from way too much sticky icky.
I'm not kidding, this thing when cleaned (it took 3 hours) of all the crap, could have got me a few bucks just on resin from the sticky icky alone.
Anyways, cleaned it up, fired it up, system starts running.
8 year old is all excited (well so was I). Put in the disk for a trial run, and it appears the laser isnt' firing up. Unsure if there is a safety thing in it that the laser won't fire with the cover off, but it will open then close very much like smash_3000. So now I'm wondering if I should buy a new DVD unit then try to mess with the firmware to make it work in his 360, or laser replace or drag the 360 behind the car and laugh hysterically as it disintegrates. Problem is, the 8 year old was looking forward to having his own 360 since Daddy doesn't share well.
The interior is in perfect condition in the drive including the rubber band, so I am stumped.
The drive is one of the MS25's.
What say ye?
EDIT: Well after I posted this, like an hour later, the dude decides he wants the 360 back even though it's broken... so there went that idea. So I am working on getting little dude the "Arcade" version of the 360. Runs around $280 here in the States and I think it will stop my son from being disappointed in the 360 being taken back. Sux though. If I thought he'd do that I'd never have mentioned it to my son. _________________________________________________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th

thats gotta suck sharky.
You could have easily bought a replacement drive from consoleshop.com and then fitted it to the 360.. I just wrote a tutorial on how to replace drives.

I saw that link hobbs and was getting ready to read it but saw you had answered this post first.
Ya... I'm seriously thinking of getting the Xbox Arcade unit for my little dude. No hard drive but comes with memory card. When finances shore up a touch, I'll snag a hard drive for him. He's kinda disappointed.
He asked about it today and I told him that the owner now had it back. _________________________________________________________ http://twitter.com/HQ_Shark2th
