Hi guys,

The dvd drive on my xbox 360 does not respond in any way. Its not like its getting stucked or is jammed or wont open or close, it simplys does nothing. It does not open or close when I push the button, doesn't play dvds, and in the xbox menu it stays "Opening" but nothng happens. I opened the xbox case and the dvd drive top case and I turned on the system to see if the lens would respond or if there was any kind of movement in the drive, but it simply does nothing. I think that the drive is not receiving power or maybe its bad contact with one of the two cords, but the sata and data cords seem fine. I really dont know what to do and I'm thinking of buying a replacement drive but I'm afraid that the one that I currently have might be working just fine and it does not have to do with the dvd drive malfunctioning. The dvd drive is a Toshiba Samsung TS-H943 (MS25) and the xbox is like two years old and has no warranty. Any help other than "buy a new xbox 360" will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Rolling Eyes

I would say try to change out the dvd cords that are in the back of the dvd drive or even see if windows on your computer can see it so that you might be able to pull the key off of the drive so you can put a new drive in otherwise without the key for that drive and if its dead in the water you will not really be able to put a new dvd drive in and play ha. But other then that the cord in the back of the dvd drive that is a bunch of wires not the sata one is the power cord that powers your dvd drive just leting you know.

Also maybe open up the dvd drive if nothing else works and see if there is anything fried on that board if not maybe everything else is crap and just pick up another dvd drive that is a samsung ms 25 and switch the boards out in it and then you should be back up and rolling just fine unless it has to do something with the 360 itself. Ms 25 drives are kinda spendy don't know why they are not as good as the benq but maybe you can us a ms28 samsung to and switch the board out with yours im not sure if this is possible but im sure others will msg on here to. I will try to look more into it.

1. Try new dvd drive power cord(i would change out both cords power and the sata just to be safe)
2. Check to see if your Dvd Drive Board is Fried(Might Check this First dont know what board im talking about just msg me and ill get ya a pick of what im talking about) Smile
3. If it is then You might be Dead in the Water(Unless You have the Key for it)
4.If Not then Get another Samsung Dvd Drive and Swap Your Board out with the new one. Pretty sure it has to be the Samsung Ms 25 Dvd Drive dont know if the other Samsung ones will work hope someone can confirm this.
5. Should be rolling just fine then.
6. If not then Maybe Something to do with Your Xbox 360 Motherboard then.

I removed the circuit board and it looks fine to me. I also think that power cord could be an issue. And what do you mean with "Dead in the water", how do I find the key?

well first try replacing the power cord and that even just laser might be dead but if everything is not working it might just be that power cord. If you board was somehow fryed u would be dead in the water meaning its over need to get a new xbox 360 because either u have to figure a way to get the chip off that board to put it in another one were that is a lot of work. But like i said try changing the power cord that goes to the dvd drive i would change both just to make sure. And then i would probably get the tools to get the key and back it up to your computer and all that so if the drive future down the line frys completely u have the key and that to put in a new drive.

New developments: I took apart the dvd drive, disconnected the ribbon cables, reconnected and assembled everything again. The dvd drive started responding again but not playing dvd's and it must be the lens that is busted because I cleaned it and its still giving me the "Unplayable disc" error. The drive wasn't opening or closing before because the little rubber band that acts as a pulley between the two wheels that open the tray is broken. So I'm just gonna buy a new one now that I know that its not a electrical problem or any sort of problem within the xbox but rather within the drive itself.

I still have two questions:
Where can I find a good flashing tutorial for my Toshiba Samsung MS25 dvd drive (in case I need it)? Because all I have to do is replace my old DVD PCB with the new dvd drive right? Also, how do I get my DVD key from the firmware chip? Thanks for the help.

It sounds like you have a bad laser on the drive if it keeps giving you the unplayable disk. This happened to me with a RROD console i bought on ebay, I fixed the RROD and then I got the same thing you did exept the drive opened but I kept getting the unplayable disk error, I replaced the laser for the drive and now it works like a champ been going for 8 months now.
