Welcome to the 360-hq. Hope you enjoy the site and all the other sites we have to offer.
To clear your 360's cache, follow these steps::
1. Go to the System Blade, then select Memory.
2. Highlight the Hard Drive and press Y.
3. Press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X.
4. Choose Yes to perform system maintenance.
Once you have completed the steps above it will remove all downloaded patches and cache.
Hope this helps _________________________________________________________

Try using a qtip and rubbing alcohol and gentlly wipe the dvd drive's laser lens down and then see if it will read discs then. _________________________________________________________

Even if his is the same make and model it wont work, they have different codes to match it to the motherboard don't they?

Best thing is to just change the laser and it will work just fine....
and it don't cost much too _________________________________________________________

Yep exactly Wes. Each dvd drive has a special key it sends the motherboard in order for it to work. So of course the guy just throwing his dvd drive into his friends 360 is not going to work. Like I said before I would try the alcohol and qtip thing first and then go with Robbieboy's idea and replace the laser lens. _________________________________________________________
