I've playd GTA IV up to about 90% completion now and its freezing hardcore. I can't get more then five minutes of play time out of it. I just bought the Elite not more then a month ago. I was playing NFS Pro Street before I cast it aside to sooth my GTA Addiction. Now when I try Pro Street my system tells me the disc is bad, even though its scratch/abuse free and I've damn near beaten it as well. Quake IV still works though.
Its odd. I want to say its acting like an overheating issue, but I dont think thats the case. After I restart I can still use the dashboard to browse and listen to music for hours. Maybe the dvd-rom is already taking a shit. I wish I could just install to the hard drive, but now I read at the top of this page that the HDD might be the problem. (sigh!)
I'll try using a memory card, and I think I might buy an aftermarket cooler for shits and giggles. I'll let you guys know. _________________________________________________________

Please do report your results. It is always helpful for more cases to be reported on what works and does not for particular issues. Well, all that did was waste fifty of my dollars. I transfered my profile and my save that I intended to use to my memory unit and ran off of that... and I got the same result. So then I ran the system with the HDD completely disconnected. Still got the same result. I wasnt able to get a hold of a cooling unit, but I dont think thats the problem in the first place.
I've just recently read that some PS3 users solved their problems by turning off their access to PSN. Supposedly GTA IV searches for internet connection every two minutes or so. If something is worng there then, boom! You have your lock up culprit.
I'm not sure how this would be a problem for me though, as I don't even have an Xbox Live account, yet alone an eathernet cord plugged into my system. Unless the game just looks automatically and for some reason isnt liking what it finds. If thats the case though, I would have no idea how to disable it.
EDIT:::
you guys really need to enable the paste function on this forum.[/quote] _________________________________________________________

Coolio.
Well, back to ze locking up. I seem to have it fixed for the moment. I'm afraid I got a little frustrated and just started playing with shit until it worked. So I wasn't too methodical. I'll list everything I did though.
First I went to my system menu and then selected my HDD. I pressed X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X on the Xbox 360 controller (I got this directly from MS Support). This erases your cache on the HDD. I then created a new profile and started GTA IV. After I was in I disabled Autosave... after seeing it was working for a while, I loaded up my original profile and loaded my most recent save, once again I disabled Autosave (I've read another instance where Autosave was disabled and the game worked better, I dont know if it actually helps). Its been working for about an hour in a half, maybe two hours now.
Either its a fluke, or one of these things... or maybe even the combo of all of them gets it working. I doubt I have the complete solution here. But doing this has taken two minutes of avalible game play and turned it into two hours so far. I almost dont want to shut it down for the night, but I'm hella tired. I've spent my whole evening trying to get it working. I just hope I'll be back in buisness when I fire it up in the morning. _________________________________________________________

Sorry to double post, but it seemed more logical to do so then to edit my original as this is sort of a progress update.
My little "fix" one post up was a fluke. It locked up again on me last night. I turned it off and cleared the cache again this morning and got another two hours out of it. That was it. Now I can clear the cache all I want and it doesnt do shit for it. I even started a new game without the HDD or a MU installed and it still crashes even after I skip the opening cutscene. As soon as I have Roman in the car it just takes a shit. It was weird though, one of the times it froze only the video. I still had audio.
I called Xbox Support today and I told them everything I have done and they were more then less dumbfounded. Told me it might be the disc (I'm sure R* has a bad file on it or something, but until a new version of the game comes out, I'm not getting a new disc). Then they told me I need to get access to a LIVE account and download an update. He didnt say they had anything in the way of an official fix, but he said "people who download the updates dont call back". For whatever thats worth.
I don't know. I'll see if I can jack an internet connection someplace and get signed on. If the online update doesnt do it for me I'm going to be out of luck. _________________________________________________________

I have a copy of GTA for my PS3 and I never had a problem with freezing. Now, my 360 version is terrible. I only bought it so I could play The Lost and Damned and it constantly freezes and disc unreadable pops up. I cleaned out the cache and it still freezes.

I deleted the cache, downloaded the update, didn't download the update, removed the HDD and tried it on my friends console and it still freezes. The disc has no scraatchs or smudges. It has to be the disc
