This information was found by kelldome as a news story, however I felt it was more in place in the forums...
I read in another post that an external usb2 hard drive could be used on the 360 to play your own music colletion without having to burn it to cd just to rip it back to the 360s own hard drive but in the post he said it could only be used on the xbox dashboard and not during gameplay.....but ive just been playing PGR3 while listening to my own mp3s
and i dont even have a proper 360 hard drive
yet because they are imopssible to find
Heres what to do:
Get a usb2 external hard drive or a standard hard drive and a usb2 caddy (like the icybox)
using your pc format the drive with fat 32 file system
copy whatever music you want to the drive
plug it into your 360
you can listen to your music on the dashboard by going to media, music, then select portable device
if your playing a game press the xbox media button (middle x silve/green chappy on your pad)
theres a little player near the bottom and a button to select music just tell it what you want to play and then just press b or the media button again and continue your game..
Haven't had a chance to test myself, but can anyone else confirm if it works?
quite interesting.....i have just been streaming from one of my computers....works well playing in games and just from the dash....later. _________________________________________________________ Xbox V1.6

I took some piccis to show the drive, the player and the menus but im stupid and cant get em into the post...lol
I tried the media centre music streaming from my pc but had a few niggley little problems like my pc wouldnt startup if my 360 wasnt turned on or my pc/xbox would just lockup (depends which one got bored first i think)
But whichever way people choose to do it atleat theres no need to sit through endless hours of cd ripping and track name editing...
I allso got an old 64mb flash drive (one o them keyring thingys) formatted it the same stuck a few songs on it and that works too, a cheap way of getting a few songs onto your 360 if you cant get hold of a 360 hard drive or a usb2 external one

ok here's the deal, you can attach any external hard drive/internal hard drive (provided you have the appropriate adapter) but the HDD has to be formatted in FAT32 as a PRIMARY partition using a partition manager like partition magic, unless you are using Windows 98se, then you can just format the drive by using the device manager.
Now, you CAN use the music in any application or game, just like DJB said, just use the guide button in the middle of your controller and select the music at the bottom of the guide, press play, and then return to the game.
