i just bought a xbox 360 on ebay, got it home, hooked it up and started to play. It played fine for a couple of hours so i turned it off and didn't turn it back on for a few days. The next time I turned it on after abiout 10 mins, it made a zapping noise and green lines would go through the frozen picture. So i researched "freezing xbox 360". They told me to pick the brick off the ground. Did that and it wokred for about 2 hour. Turned off the the 360 and when I tried to use it today it and the same zapping noise and some times bright dots would appear on the frozen screen and the xbox was unresponsive. Some times when it would zap and freeze the screen would go black or bright colours and the box was unresponsive.
Tried no HDD
Tried the fan cooling system
Tried playing with no case on it
Tried picking up the brick form the floor
Tried playing arcade live game, not running DVD
Hacked the firmware
I am at wits ends, I think if I don't get it fixed soon I might have to try running it over with my car to see if it works.
I searched the forums no help
Help please....Parker

after the loud zapping noise there is no audio, just a frozen screen and unresponsive xbox.

Not sure what the guy did to it before you. But sounds like he was aware of this problem. When you took out the motherboard, in the motherboard tray did you notice any black spots, or anything that looked out of the ordinary?
The zapping noise sounds like a short. Check all your capacitors as well, the round things that are placed all over the motherboard. Check your dvd cable, ensure theres no spilts in it. What I would do is, I know it might be teadious, is start up your 360, with the case off so you can see the motherboard. Let it run, and try to listen for the zap, see what area it is coming from. Thus giving your a starting point on where to check for faults.
This is the first I've heard of this problem. Try that stuff out, and if that dont help well go from there.

I just wanted to add to this topic because i have recently noticed my AUSTRALIAN (PAL) Xbox 360 is making a zapping noise occassionally.. It seems to come from my dvdrom drive when it has a read error.. It then follow's by a freeze. Occassionally the zap noise will happen but the console will freeze for a moment and then its fine again.
Australia must have gotten a bunch of dud xbox 360 consoles since i know plenty of friends who have sent their consoles back because of DVDROM drive erros and red rings..
My NTSC console that i imported and has been on nearly every single day has only just started playing up and not reading everything but its near 2 years old and on 24x7.
Your zap noise sounds much louder then mine.. I wouldnt say the dvd noise is loud but it is very noticeable and sounds near like a short circuit. _________________________________________________________ HQ Network:

From what I've been seeing all over the net, your country didn't get duds...every country did. Just bought one for my son, and he's had it 2 weeks and already it's scratched up and ruined one disc (no, he didn't move the system while playing...no reason for it to have happened), and now when he puts in a disc half the time it makes clicking noises as soon as inserted and stops reading the disc, so he can't play. I can't believe Microsoft would put out such a crappy product...knowing it's missing vital parts that keep the disc in place? And not replacing discs that aren't published by them (a list of about 8...wow)...so 50 bucks for Oblivion down the drain...even though it's THEIR machine that ruined it. I tried talking my son into returning it and getting whatever money back he could, but he insists he'll do whatever he has to in order to get the thing working right. Why does everyone want to go through all this pain and money to fix a product that should be the responsibility of the company that puts it out? And I am a gamer...loved playing Playstation 2, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis when it came out. Never had to do this crap to play their stuff. I just don't understand.....
