IGN is reporting that the 360 can output a digital 1080p signal.

Microsoft just got back to us to clarify the Xbox 360's ability to transmit a digital signal. In short, it can, which means that Microsoft could conceivably release an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360. This is good news, and relieves a great deal of our concern over the Xbox 360's ability to effectively work with 1080p. Microsoft's full response is marked in the Q & A portion of this feature.

With this new information in mind, consider us relatively mollified. A future HDMI cable for the 360 will resolve the problems we outline in our discussion of 1080p compatibility. Let's hope Microsoft decides the market demands it sooner rather than later.

But there is still no HDMI out port on the 360. Microsoft will release a software patch for people wanting to use 1080p, but the fact remains that to get a HDMI lead for the 360 you will need a new version of the console with one fitted.

But thats upto Microsoft to decide if and when they do that. But they have clarified that the 360 is fully capable of doing so.

The lack of a port on the back doesn't really mean anything, don't forget that it has the A/V multi out, it could combine some of the pins and have HDMI that way.

Well hopefully that will work sjohn. I'm not 100% keyed up on the HDMI issue but from what I know it has the bonus of combining audio and visual into one cable and has a 2 way communications system that allows a TV to speak to the source end to tell it what resolutions it supports.. Shocked

And there is an A, which is the standard HDMI lead with 19 pins and now a B that has 29 pins that supports higher resolutions than 1080i. Now this is where I have a grey area, would you class 1080p as a higher resolution due to the fact it requires more bandwidth than 1080i?

I'm starting to get lost here. Razz

So pretty much would you need an A or B type lead and in either case would you loose quality by doing it the way you suggest.. And would you loose that two way communication? Shocked

I'm just going to go and have a lay down now..
