I thought I would bounce this to the top. Change the lid of the drive only. This is the same thing that was happening to the old xbox consoles. Ya, the rubber band trick will work...if you like to give the motor the extra work, but whats happening is the top spindle is getting stuck on the motor centering spindle. Like there is too much contact. This fix also works on the drives that are leaving rings on your disks. If you cannot find another lid, and you have the guts to do it, just press on the top spindle outwards to bend the lid up. Too much and you have a wavy disk getting rings, and it slips when spinning. I have done this myself and can say it works quite well.
Hope this once again helps out

Ok guys, you are all over complicating this entire situation. There is a very simple fix for this problem and it's the same for ALL 360 drives.
Start by opening the 360 up and remove the dvd drive. Open up the dvd drive by removing the 4 screws on the underside.
Once opened up it should be fairly easy to make the dvd tray slide out by rotating the cogs that control the laser and tray mechanics.
Once you have the tray about half way out you can easilly see and reach teh rubber band that links the tray and laser mechanics.
Use a needle nose pliers to pull it out and rinse it under some cold water for a few seconds then dry with any ordinary towel.
Then get 2 Qtips, and make 1 end of each one wet (spit will do if ya want) and stick it up against the 2 separate parts using the wet end against the wheel to clean it and then just swap the Qtip around and use the dry side to dry it.
Once you have cleaned both wheels and the rubber band, simply reassemble the assembly and slide the tray back into the closed position, but kinda do it a little bit hard to make it all click back into position.
Reassemble the dvd drive and 360 and.......voila, a perfectly functioning dvd drive.
Any questions, just ask. _________________________________________________________ Predtech

I agree with predtech, that should be the #1 before anything, but if that fails/or if you get rings on your disks my way will work as a second option. No hot air or c/p on this one, done it for myself on a couple of consoles.

Ya... I'm seriously thinking of getting the Xbox Arcade unit for my little dude. No hard drive but comes with memory card. When finances shore up a touch, I'll snag a hard drive for him. He's kinda disappointed.
He asked about it today and I told him that the owner now had it back.
with the arcade unit can't you just buy a hd seperate and attach it on? It would be much cheaper. get it off amazon for like $25.00. I got most of my stuff there and everythign works fine. Only thing i bought in store had to be my 360 unit with the harddrive the regular one 20GB. Got the red ring after like 6-7 mnths, sent it in. it was repaired just fine free of charge and my disc tray does not work well now. at first, it would be jsut a little trouble but now i gotta press hard on it just to get it open. I'm thinking bout sending it in. It gave me a quote of $94.00 it'll take to repair. Im sitting here wondering if i should buy a strip down model (the arcade unit) and just add on my harddrive and scrap my old 360 box. sigh, wish this would've never happened. _________________________________________________________ The Burninator...

Why pay for a new console when fixing such a minor problem is so simple? _________________________________________________________ Predtech

Lol, yeah man. I miss being able to admin more than i can manage but i have alot of personal family commitments that tie me up basically most of the time. I check in like every single day, i just never have the time to really help out. I spoke to hobbs about it a long time ago and he understands what's going on.
Hopefully i'll be making a bit of a comeback, but i'm sure it won't be for long because my wife is pregnant with our first child and is due next June, but for now hopefully i can get a little bit done here. _________________________________________________________ Predtech
